First light has been the ticket for me my last few trips. The bite has been pretty steady until 8 or 9, but it’s a strike every cast between 6 and 6:30. If I could get it together to be there by 5:45, I would.

That set up you’re describing in creole and bassa bassa and sounds a lot like what I thought was my secret honey hole. I usually fish during the week and have it by myself, but was one of six boats there yesterday (5/31). It was a slaughter. Put a limit together by 10:15. I was the first boat there and went and tried a few other areas when it got a little crowded and the bite slowed down. Finished the day back there after everyone left and picked up the last few in my limit. Weapon of choice for the day was a green hornet matrix shad on a 1/4 oz. A few on vudu shrimp. One on a jerkbait over a nearby reef. I had two go 18”. Lost two at the boat that my lying eyes said were every bit of 20”. Apologies to you and your son if you heard my profanities after losing the first one, if that was you.
I haven’t put a report together because there wasn’t too much to learn from my day. When the conditions are like they were yesterday, I’m a one-trick pony. If you get there before sunrise, it’s been non-stop for an hour. Great fun. Glad y’all could enjoy it too.

That’s awesome man. I haven’t gotten my fly fishing gear together to use down here, but that sounds like a fun day! I’m planning on headed down tomorrow, depending on if I get a wild hair and when I get the boat in the water I may end up fishing the front side of the island or Elmer’s.

I went on 11/6 and never found them. Tried three bayou bay, airplane bay, round lake, and the northeast corner of little lake where three bayou bay empties into it. I was quite disappointed. Granted the wind played a much bigger role in my day than I had planned on and I feel like the south end of little lake would have been a no-go for me that day. My next window is about two weeks from now and I’m fully expecting them to be stacked up in the normal fall spots by then, if not already.

I’ve been curious about this as well, especially for redfish. It makes total sense. I hear its pretty easy to do, but theres something about an open pocket knife and a thrashing redfish that makes me uncomfortable. I guess cutting the gills is the easiest? I have memories of this being the way its done with salmon on a trip i took to the manistee river in michigan 25 years ago. I’ve heard theres an artery near the gills thats easy, but i don’t know my redfish anatomy well enough. I’m targeting trout Monday, but if a red sneaks their way into the mix I may give it a try and report back. Let us know what you find out!

Keepers under birds has been a rare find for me this year. Nice trip!

I fish Lafitte and when I run up the Myrtle grove canal I am just in awe of all of the good redfish water. One of these days I’m going to take some time to explore more.

I fished with two buddies today and it wasn’t a bust but wasn’t as good as you. The weather forecast made us nervous to run that far from Lafitte. We didn’t go south beyond creole bay. Definitely not all the way to GI. I applaud your guts. It was one of the few days where the weather was a LOT better than what we expected. On the flip side, the fishing didn’t match up. We made a few strategic errors. I’ll try and put a report together tomorrow but long story short, keeper trout are apparently being caught throughout the Barataria basin and we are still waiting on the summer pattern to develop.

Great report! Thanks for sharing!

Oh man. I’m on my phone so don’t think I can open up this set of tracks. But let me tell you. It’s not my favorite. Not so bad if there’s plenty of water but in the winter it can get dicey. If you can upload a screenshot I can provide more specifics. Off the top of my head spoonbill bay is the safest. Bay geolette bay is super shallow especially where you enter on the west side. Last time I was out I tried to take bayou DuPont all the way from at round to the pen for only the second time and it’s soooo easy to get turned around even staring at the gps. Next thing you know you’re kicking up mud in less than a foot of water. I see the guides do it all of the time without an issue but that’s to be expected.

We ended up making the run to GI Monday and wasted a couple of hours bouncing around before we got chased out by the weather that Windfinder was waffling on. Stopped at a few spots under birds on the way back to Lafitte and managed to find some keepers, but the island seemed pretty dead with lots of fog and mist. The beach side was too rough for us and the water near the jetty at caminada was a mess.
I’m thinking about going back out Thursday so let me know how you do Wednesday. I’m questioning whether or not it’ll be worth making the run all the way down there to catch the last 2-3 hours of an incoming tide. I’ll probably stick to more interior areas.

We do in fact have the same honey holes! Full report forthcoming

We can compare notes next time I see you. I love the board but not enough to be throwing private coordinates around lol

That’s right where my mind is. I imagine all of those trout from the pen are moving down bayou dupont and through round lake and airplane bay on their way to saltier water for the spawn. I want to believe in my honey hole in creole bay because of how well it produced last year so it’s going to get some attention tomorrow. But it seemed dead two weeks ago, granted conditions were not great. Hoping to be underway about 5:30 and fishing by sunrise.

As someone who about once a year leaves an accessory switch on and drains the cranking battery…this would be helpful.
