I threw all my 13 away it was good for a while. Swapped to Daiwa, now I have a mixture of Bates and Daiwa. I love the Bates but they are high $. I’d recommend the goat or salty 150. I like the hundos but, I like the 150s more.

yes, I use a med heavy or a medium, both with fast tip. If you use a Med Heavy use one that is closer to a Med than to a Heavy. its hard to explain this because not every MED Heavy rod is the same. usually there is a specification on rods with line weight and lure weight, problem with most rods is the only lure size spec rod for 3/4oz is usually a heavy, so you definitely will have to get use to the feel of which ever rod you use. I know most of the time i’m using something heavier than normal, the bite feels either more dramatic than it should or you don’t feel the bite at all. so usually when fishing, with a heavier jig the bite I usually experience is when I lift up the jig to pop it off the bottom and i feel the resistance of the fish having it in there mouth vs. an actual bite. Another bit of advice too, I’d use a 6ft rod or one that is a couple inches longer. The shorter the rod the less stress on your forearm and elbow, Plus you don’t have to cast as far when throwing at bridge pilings.

Are you dead set on launching from Island Marina? its a nice launch, just not always the best launch for conditions. not knowing what kind of boat you have and how much water you can cover can be difficult to help you iron out your plan. So lake Catherine is not that deep other than sawmill pass and rigolets. you can fish the grass beds which are the on edges in lake catherine and catch a few reds and trout, you can fish the small passes. I’d opt out and go to Bayou Beinvenue, or fish the Bridges in Lake Pontchartrain. But I’d definitely keep an eye out on wind direction and speed of wind if you go in the lake. If you go to Bayou Beinvenue, you will have to figure out if they are in the flats, or on the rocks along the MRGO, as well as if they are deep along the wall. I think the tide will be right this weekend to catch them and you will have to kind of figure it out. As the week progresses you can check out windfinder to see what the wind is doing and can make better plans, Have you Taken IF101? If you have you can figure out the ideal launch site to fish an area that is best protected, and also you can read the reports here to see what has been successful for the other members on the site, Past reports from last year around this time can help too. Also what is your fishing style? are you using Live bait, plastics, hard baits?

I look at both Shell Beach and Rigolets. its closer to the shell beach one if your fishing the rocks in MRGO.

I need another Venice trip, I’ve went out in Lake P 3 times with 1 keeper redfish to show for it!

I use the side scan, in Lake P on highway 11 and train trestles, I use it in Pearl river a lot. its great for finding structure, you don’t always see fish. Rock jetties its useful, I mostly look for balls of bait fish, you can definitely see redfish, sheepshead, drum and catfish. I also use down imaging a lot, when I lived closer to Manchac, I used the down imaging in the pass to catch catfish and I’d drop down on them to catch them, I use DI the same way at hwy 90 rigolets bridge.

ok so you can cover some water, if you get a heavy east wind, its not a great place to launch. you can run most places in Lake Catherine, no problem. its 4ft deep in most spots.

I was throwing a Lost coast baits Craw, but a matrix craw will work too, or even a big mouth baits craw, which is basically the same bait. I was using a white craw most of the day, but then swapped over to a color called sweet tea which has is a red tinted brown with a red flake, when cleaning the fish they all had small crabs in there stomach.

no the trout was in the middle along 1000 mullet, caught on a Lost coast baits crawfish. caught on accident while taking out a back lash, the three redfish were caught the same way, while taking out a back lash, like they wanted something on the bottom and not moving!
