I do use braid, on all my spinning rods for inshore and on my heavy flipping rods. Backlash a reel with $20 worth of braid vs $3 worth of mono and it’s so bad you have to cut half the line off. I’d rather lose the mono, he asked about learning. That’s why I’d learn with mono.

Also learning with a DC reel is handicapping your learning. Learning how to adjust and set your reel is part of it. I adjust mine all the time, especially when I casting far on windy days. Nothing against DC reels, just if you swap to a non dc reel, can you still have an enjoyable fishing experience or will you be spending your day picking out backlashes.

Don’t learn using braid! First practice casting at tree trunks and spots in your yard, I’d start learning using 12-17 pound mono. If you use a bucket lay it over and cast into it. Don’t worry too much on distance, practice accuracy, nothing wrong with using a 6ft or 6’6” rod to start. I use them more than 7ft rods. Practice roll cast and pitching. Good time to be Bass fishing and learning the techniques. It will definitely make you a better inshore fisherman.

However, I will tell you that a great all-around lure to use for redfish is a Texas rigged craw. I’ve used different fancy swim hooks over the years, and simple arrived to the conclusion that a Texas rig is the way to go. You can sight fish with them, or chunk and wind. I usually use a Net Bait Baby Paca Craw. Pearl white is a good color because you can see it easier.

I use to throw more spinner baits and chatter baits, but if your fishing a few days in a row the Texas rig craw, or a 4 inch swim bait with a flashy spinner will be a lot less fatigue on your arms if your not sight fishing and just blind casting.

I’ll definitely listen in, perfect time to do this, I feel the few people who have tried this in the past gave up or didn’t create something relevant to what most of us do.

I’ve wondered if there has been any tank pond monsters caught how long someone would be tight lipped about it? Last two weeks would have been premium time for someone to catch one if they were there.

It’s ok, I went to Hopedale Friday thinking I was going to do a hurting, I could only fish til 1pm, I spent way too much time trying to catch in deeper holes only to catch a few in shallow flats right before I had to get off water and head to the house. And then thought how dumb I was not to start shallow and work to the deeper areas if they weren’t shallow.

I think I’m done with Bayou B for a while, too many people out there. I’ll stick to hopedale and Lake P. But I definitely pick productive times when the crowd isn’t out.

I use to think the same way, but there is definite areas you can run and catch fish without having to worry about loosing your lower unit, areas like Baptist collete, Dennis Pass, the Jump, a lot of the reports that I’ve read on here in Venice aren’t really going in questionable areas. Once I realized this, I put a plan together, looked on GED, Made a route to an area and I found fish. The Guides try to put this idea that you need a guide in Venice, to travel safe and catch fish, and that’s not true, you need a good plan and the will to make it happen. I’m really trying to go back down there, but remodeling a home, working out of town and having to make time for family, really makes it hard, especially living right next to Lake P it makes it easier just to fish closer to home.

It really is, January is usually one of the best months to fish it too. Fishing in runouts in the canals , the bass stack up. Before the fish kill from the paper mill several years ago I had trips where I caught 20 bass in one run out and then go to the next and catch more the same. The launch at East Pearl you have to go through Mississippi to get to it. But it’s a free launch. It’s one of my favorite places to fish. Bass right on the bank and trout out deeper. I’ve also had trips where I caught trout reds flounder and bass all in one trip.

Ledges, I first fished it with 1/4 oz jig and then went back over with a 3/8oz. Caught more with the 3/8 going down the ledges. But then after the tide came up more it seemed they moved up with it.
