Why do you say you want the tidal highways vs streets and sidewalks? Is it something related to the conditions today or just a general rule of thumb? I was trying to avoid falling back to Bayou Thomas since it’s a community hole but I did mark it as an option. I wanted to explore and find some new locations on my own. We did catch fish at ft 1-3 cp. 23 caught 5 keeper trout and 1 red. Only had 3 hours to fish total.

One other question I have that I don’t think was covered in if101 is how to fish a falling tide vs the wind at a marsh drain. Spots 1-3 all had west wind pushing water towards the shore line but if you went into the marsh drain you could see the water coming out of it.

Do you suspect those spots weren’t productive for any particular reason? Trout haven’t migrated in yet, water temp still too high, etc?

“Congratulations, you just learned where not to go. (that’s why we post those reports anyway, because they still help others)

Of course, in the context of your fishing trip I wouldn’t chalk it up to that because I’ve fished that area a lot and I know that the majority of fish just aren’t inside yet.

    They’re about to be.

So don’t write off those spots yet.”

Do you think the main reason the trout haven’t moved in yet is due to water temperature still being high?

I pulled all of the 9/2025 and 9/2026 water temperature data for new canal station Lake P because the water temp sensor doesn’t seem to be operational for the shell beach buoy anymore and plotted it in excel. Not sure how close Borgne and Lake P are in temperature usually but figured it would be better than nothing to compare.

I noticed the water was consistently higher this year vs last year by a few degrees. One other piece of data that stood out was that this year in the middle of september (14-16) we had major spike in water temperature around 89 degrees.

Thanks for the response. I started the course yesterday and have enjoyed the content so far. I think I got to the 6th video that I believe talked about water capacity vs water velocity and highway theory.

Unfortunately, I don’t have a better screen shot from the other day but maybe the general tide images will have some sort of explanation of what I was trying to convey. Just downloaded windfinder as well. My initial impression is the UI looks nice on the map view. I also like the forecast view. Would you recommend the premium version of the app or is that just to remove ads?

Main follow up question would be what do you do when your predictions or planning seem to be correct but you’re not finding fish or bait? Especially in a limited speed boat for traveling further distances.

Thanks for the feedback. I was told we could go fishing Sunday late yesterday. I figured I wouldn’t get a responses in time for feedback for the trip but wanted to post for my first trip planning as an exercise and to get post trip feedback.

Unfortunately, we didn’t have a great day. I caught one rat red and didn’t see any bait for most of the areas we went. Saw a lot of boats out in general in several of the spots I wanted to try. Also didn’t see anyone catch anything besides catfish on shrimp.

On a positive note, I did feel several things I hoped for/predicted conditions wise from if101 course was correct (clean water, areas water should be moving, areas we should be more protected from wind, etc). Found clean moving water in most places I planned on fishing, the deep hole spots I found via ged and Navionics and were actually there.

The main thing that was unexpected was the wind felt closer to 15-20 mph than 6-8 mph.

We started by briefly fishing the closest spots I wanted to try on icw south side and the water was a bit dirtier than I expected. We then went to unknown pass north west side towards lake Catherine and fished the marsh drains going into the pass by the bridge. We had a very difficult time the entire day managing our boats positioning with the cheap 30 lb thrust trolling motor/wind strength. It’s also located on the side of the boat and the handle is very low so I have to bend down to adjust it. It is still better than nothing though.

First surprise was getting to the unknown pass/lake c intersection and it was white caps everywhere. I made a judgement and said let’s not bother and go try the other more eastern side of unknown pass. We did that and found one boat trolling the shoreline towards us from the northern side of unknown pass. Their positioning definitely made more sense than ours so we decided to adjust our approach and also driver further up the pass slightly past the 2 holes I found on Navionics and drift back towards the icw along the shoreline and fish it. That was a lot easier to manage the trolling motor.

Then we went to the borgne side of unknown pass to fish some of those spots I had marked. There were a lot of boats there and we briefly fished the area but didn’t have any luck.

At this point we noticed we messed up and didn’t check the gas tank before hand and were low on gas. Adding this to the checklist lol. Was about 9 am so we decided to head back to get gas. About 25 mins back.

Unfortunately, this meant that we weren’t able to fish the alligator bend area marsh drains into borgne. We had 1 gallon of gas of the 6 gallon tank when we got to the launch to refill on chef.

Instead of going all the way back to the area we were in I suggested we try bayou b and stop at bayou Thomas otw. Going westward in the ice was a lot rougher of a trek. We went to bayou Thomas and were surprised to find no one there. Water was moving well and pretty clean. We fished some of the cuts in the bayou and that’s where I got the rat red.

At this point my buddy didn’t want to go much further so we headed into borgne by bayou Thomas and fished the shoreline there. We found another bayou that was parallel to bayou Thomas and trolled through it and fished it. The water was pretty deep there, water was very clean, little bait though and it seemed fishy.

No luck there and we headed back around 12 to call it a day.

Felt like I still got some good experience on the water but obviously would have liked to catch some more fish.

Also thanks for pointing out that obstruction in the water in unknown pass. Hopefully next time I will be able to plan the trip out further in advance and get some pre trip feedback.

Thanks for the info. Just got to the planning resources tools section of 101. Looking forward to diving into it.
