Storms that come in from the east through the southern Caribbean are always a heart stopper. Definitely need to keep an eye on this one!

Not a stupid question at all. I have used my raw water live well on my 19 ft center console several times to keep a few fish for eating while releasing the rest. I agree with Captain Devin as the limit of fish in a live well is 3-5 depending on size. I have had no problem getting back to the dock with the trout still alive for me to clean and ice down. I have noticed however that the fish seem to clean a little better when cold versus being hotter. And, I have only done this in cooler temperatures like late fall through early spring. Welcome to the forum JDB!

Do trout prefer and gorge themselves on brown shrimp vs white shrimp or any other bait? I have noticed trout having shrimp in their stomachs when cleaning but also other pin fish in their bellies. It is an interesting comment by WLF. Maybe the 2 limit over 20 rule is starting to work?

Devin,
I definitely know your pain. The same thing happened to me when I was close to your age over 20 years ago. I was bending over to pick up a minnow out of the live well when I fell to my knees with pain in my lower back like something snapped. I was put on muscle relaxers and PT, but I got through it and thank God it has never happened again! Maybe a little PTSD as to why I don’t like to fish with live bait anymore. Great post and never give up is the lesson!

Thank you Capt. Devin and Cloud9. I haven’t been out since December because the water has been so low. Redfish action was pretty good in Robinson canal near the grocery store you mentioned. That canal is 24 feet deep in some places. Cloud9, I have fished Madison Bay and have done well on the south side of it over some oyster reefs. I haven’t tried the central part or northern end too much. The Placid Canal lock is closed right now for levy work. I use that canal to get to Madison Bay as it is only about a 5-minute run. With it closed I have to go all the way around through Bush canal near Boudreaux canal and that is a run for me. I will let you guys know how I do tomorrow and Friday. Tight lines gentlemen!

Hi chipredfish3030, you may want to try some oyster reefs further in as well since you will be several days into a warming trend. The sun forecast is high, and I have been getting reports that the trout are well inside where Falgout Canal pours out into Lake Decade. This is similar to your plan and should work well as Falgout Canal is east and north of you. One specific report I got was that you had to use extra weight to get the bait to the bottom because the white trout were tearing it up before getting to the specks. I hope this helps the community.

Great post! The information shared is perfect without giving away the pinpoint location. This is how all posts should be.

Thank you Capt. Devin! Confirms what I have experienced and noticed how bigger trout are often caught on swim baits vs. shrimp.

I definitely agree with that as I noticed they would bee line it for the fish once we hooked them up.

I will have to try that! Never heard of it. Thanks! It is amazing how the course material has taught me to look at the water and movement differently as I always just fished where everyone else did. Thanks Devin!

Yes. The launch at Bush Canal has been completely redone by the Parish. It is a twin launch with nice docks and parking. There are 3 port-a-potties and even a fishing dock next to the docks for no boats only shore fishermen. I have used it but the old launch at what is left of Sportsman’s Paradise is operational and I use it when I need to pick up my boat from my boat lift. I have seen the Wildlife and Fisheries at the Sportsman boat launch too. They frequent the Coco-marina launch and occasionally the launch at Bush canal. My boat lift is next to a humble motorhome on a cement slab bayou side but it does the trick nicely. The tides should be very nice and cooperative this weekend. I expect to see more boats on the water. Best of luck fishing timbofishn.

Great point. I think after reading Daniel’s reply that it has to do with the weather and temps. I was just curious if anyone was experiencing the same and it appears so.

That’s how it was for me to Daniel. A strong wave and then nothing until another wave came in. I tried moving around only to go back to my original spot to find the bite back on and in waves. I will be heading out again tomorrow with family members in from Texas that want me to take them fishing and will report if the bite pattern is the same.
