There’s my laugh of the day. Instructing customers to be careful with a sting ray, just before getting stung. lol

Thanks for the entire list, I’m sure there are others you could have added.

Yes, there was a lot more that went well than not. At my age I’ve learned about learning curves. You’ve just got to plow into them and be miserable for a while. The reward on the other side is usually pays off.

You were right about arrival time, getting to the actual dam at 5:50 was perfect. Such a peaceful time to be out on the water also.

Traveling in the dark also motivated me to finally install navigational lights on my kayak. They worked perfectly. So that’s another win on a tough catching day.

Re: To Boat or Not to Boat: The pain of the limitations of the kayak do not yet exceed the pain of BREAK OUT ANOTHER THOUSAND.

Looking forward to the next trip.

    Thanks for the advice.

I like focusing on ONE THING. Because it can certainly get overwhelming. Thanks for the perspective.

The reels were spooled by Marsh and Bayou, I live about 5 minutes from them.

When I say, “bird nesting”, it’s not like it was a huge nest. It would just create a couple of loops at the reel most of the time. This would cause me to pull all the line out until the loop was fixed. In the wind and in a kayak, this was a chore.

One of the times it bird nested so badly that I had to cut the line.

I did not think of having a backup combo with the exact setup I was fishing. I thought the point of bringing different combos is to have different setups.

    Thank you 🙏🏻

    Rock Dam Tide question:

If the tide is incoming does that mean water is flowing into the rocks in the north side? (Probably the south side too)

Does the configuring of the north side of the dam, the way it’s tucked around in a canal, affect how fast the water moves? Does the water move slower here.

    Tide question 2:

If I’m casting toward the rocks as Capt. Devin has instructed, will I be retrieving against the incoming tide?

Does this really matter at the rock dam?

    1. Difficult but not impossible for me to drag my kayak across.

    2. Technique: I’m letting the jigheads fall to the bottom, then giving them 2 or 3 pops before letting them fall again, correct. Casting against the rocks, the same thing, right?

    Goodness gracious.

You’re right…so many. And willing to comedown $2k from asking?

Why so many and why so negotiable?

Also, wishing would have joined LAFB Elite before I rushed out there and bought a kayak. 😉

    Nice build, by the way!

First of all, your opening line “If you’re trailering and launching at ramps then you’ve outgrown the kayak” kind of hit home.

Now that you mention it, yeah I kind of have an identity crisis I guess. There’s a time and place for a kayak. But trailering and landing at marinas and trolling two miles to my only spot of the day ain’t it.

Secondly, the Copenhagen, Peanut Oil, and “no duck hats” advice was the laugh I needed on a Sunday night.

    Thank you for both lol

Tell me more about this flatboat business.

2 years ago I bought a kayak to be able to just get out on the water. Never inshore fished a day in my life before.

Spent $3k on the kayak, a nice 13.5’ Old Town with a trolling motor…spot lock etc.

Paid another $1500 (registration and taxes included) for a new kayak trailer from Tractor Supply.

So at $5k I was out on the water puttering around in a 4mph top speed kayak.

I’ve had some good times in it, don’t get me wrong. And it’s NOT breaking down on me constantly. If it does I can paddle.

    But…

    – As far as “fishing spots”, it’s one and done. All or nothing.

    – I’ve still got all four kids at home, and I can’t really take them fishing with me.

    – it’s so heavy I often just launch at marinas rather than on the side of the road somewhere.

Question: If you had $5k to spend on an inshore fishing vessel, what would you buy?

I do have floro on my casting tackle. No braid. So there’s that.

I’m practicing in the yard, getting hung up on vines and thorns hanging off trees in my front yard. That’s good Trestle practice right there.

One thing I’m noticing is that using casting tackle out of my kayak might be an issue dues to the softball pitch nature of flinging the thing.

    Gonna try it though.

Question: Are you morally against braid/leader in spinning reels as well, or just on casting tackle?

A “throwback” for me is under 15inches because I suck at cleaning them. lol

If I keep ones smaller than 15”-18” I’m hating life hacking away on my cleaning table back at home.

Yeah saw this report when I got home. Apparently Chas was not where I was today. Not that I could have found them with a boat. But I certainly would had lest the trestles after about hour #2.

How deep do I need to drop thermometer to acquire water temps properly?

Here’s what I got. Bought it off marketplace 2 years ago. Long before i was a member of LAFB Elite.

Looks like I got flouro on it. I believe I had Marsh and Bayou install it for me.

I can stand up but most of the time I sit down because I’m 6’3” and top heavy. Lol

My seat is pretty high up. I sit in top of the kayak.

@Aspiring_Angler this should answer your question as when to get a line in the water. That alone makes this fishing report valuable.”

In other words, get out there early while the sun is not yet out? Have a line in the water before it gets too bright and too warm?
