There’s my laugh of the day. Instructing customers to be careful with a sting ray, just before getting stung. lol

Thanks for the entire list, I’m sure there are others you could have added.

Yes, there was a lot more that went well than not. At my age I’ve learned about learning curves. You’ve just got to plow into them and be miserable for a while. The reward on the other side is usually pays off.

You were right about arrival time, getting to the actual dam at 5:50 was perfect. Such a peaceful time to be out on the water also.

Traveling in the dark also motivated me to finally install navigational lights on my kayak. They worked perfectly. So that’s another win on a tough catching day.

Re: To Boat or Not to Boat: The pain of the limitations of the kayak do not yet exceed the pain of BREAK OUT ANOTHER THOUSAND.

Looking forward to the next trip.

    Thanks for the advice.

I like focusing on ONE THING. Because it can certainly get overwhelming. Thanks for the perspective.

The reels were spooled by Marsh and Bayou, I live about 5 minutes from them.

When I say, “bird nesting”, it’s not like it was a huge nest. It would just create a couple of loops at the reel most of the time. This would cause me to pull all the line out until the loop was fixed. In the wind and in a kayak, this was a chore.

One of the times it bird nested so badly that I had to cut the line.

I did not think of having a backup combo with the exact setup I was fishing. I thought the point of bringing different combos is to have different setups.

    Thank you 🙏🏻

    Rock Dam Tide question:

If the tide is incoming does that mean water is flowing into the rocks in the north side? (Probably the south side too)

Does the configuring of the north side of the dam, the way it’s tucked around in a canal, affect how fast the water moves? Does the water move slower here.

    Tide question 2:

If I’m casting toward the rocks as Capt. Devin has instructed, will I be retrieving against the incoming tide?

Does this really matter at the rock dam?

    1. Difficult but not impossible for me to drag my kayak across.

    2. Technique: I’m letting the jigheads fall to the bottom, then giving them 2 or 3 pops before letting them fall again, correct. Casting against the rocks, the same thing, right?

As I’m working on my trip this week, I have a few additional questions.

I watched your winter course and you mentioned this fish commonly biting when it warms up layer in the day rather the cold morning.

Would that pertain here? Should look to fish later in the morning or at noon?

Another general question stimulated by the mini-course is about the annual shrimp migration.

I would think this late in the winter the shrimp migration would be over. Is that the case?

Is so, when did it end this year?

    Thank you, Captain.

I appreciate the coaching. It’s starting to get too hot out there to be pissing in the wind and throwing marshmallows on kites.

Next week my plan is to venture beyond the Trestles again. Monday I didn’t have time to plan a trip, so I just slung everything in the kayak and went where I’ve caught fish before.

    So…in other words.

It’s much ado about nothing if you know how to fish.

(Or if you’re an LAFB Elite member.)

How deep do I need to drop thermometer to acquire water temps properly?

Here’s what I got. Bought it off marketplace 2 years ago. Long before i was a member of LAFB Elite.

Looks like I got flouro on it. I believe I had Marsh and Bayou install it for me.

I can stand up but most of the time I sit down because I’m 6’3” and top heavy. Lol

My seat is pretty high up. I sit in top of the kayak.

@Aspiring_Angler this should answer your question as when to get a line in the water. That alone makes this fishing report valuable.”

In other words, get out there early while the sun is not yet out? Have a line in the water before it gets too bright and too warm?

    1. After watching this 14 minute video I can see why you did not want to type the multiple thousand word answer that already provided with that great video. lol

As I was posting the original question I thought, “I’ll be there is a video on how cold fronts affect fish”.

The next time I have that thought I’ll pause and go to the video catalog.

    2. My Kayak is lithium battery powered. Top speed 4pm. Spotlock. Range of about 15 miles, but that’s too far to make long boring runs at 4mph.

    3. Is your suggestion of fishing Wednesday based on the “3 Day Rule” mentioned in the video?

Jerkbait, I would jerk it and let it rise a bit and jerk and reel again

That brown tweaker was on a 3/8 oz. I think. It was pretty heavy and the current was than strong. So I figured it might have been looking unnatural because it was sinking too fast after I would pop it twice.

So I went with the lighter 1/8 OZ (I think) with the Matrix shad. And that white one is a Slam Shady 2.0 with an 1/8 oz. As well.

I would cast to the pilings and let it drip slowly so as the make sure the lighter jig head got to the bottom.

I did get hung up a lot, so.

Oh, also, at first when I was using the heavier jig head I was getting all kinds of algae on my lure, the long brown one.

When I switched to the lighter ones I didn’t get grass the rest of the day.

So maybe I wasn’t reaching bottom?

  • Thank you.

Yes, one heck of a dinner. My wife is cooking them tonight.

I’ve only seen the sigh-red fishing on YouTube. Can’t wait to try it!
