Conditions seemed to play out exactly as forecasted which was nice. A little bit of overcast helped keep it very tolerable considering we are in the dog days of summer. Launched at 6 and I think left the marina about 9:40am.
The people at PAC are worth their weight in gold. Helped us launch and gave us some tips. Honestly though right as we were heading out there were two sets of 50 diving birds within spitting distance of the marina and they mentioned that the night before people were catching keepers.
So we blew up our entire plan and decided to go after specs. I honestly thought there was no way they’d be this far north this time of year.
Ironed out some kinks in the gear. Lots of untwisting my boys line, teaching him how to drive etc. Ended up catching 5 throwbacks over about 90 minutes. Popping corks. Probably a good thing too because I forgot the ice chest (measuring stick) in the truck!!! I could hear you saying “if it belongs in the boat put it in the boat– ha!”
The birds moved on and we explored for another hour or so and then called it. The boy has as much fun driving as he does fishing which is alright by me. Very successful trip by our standards considering time of year. Really just trying to get some experience for the fall. I feel like I need to rewatch a lot of videos now with a much better understanding of tides / depth changes etc.
THANK YOU for this course. I have next to zero fishing experience prior to this summer. And this course has given me a concise way to learn how to do something without spending months and years cursing at the launch or on the water. The trip we just had is something I would’ve only imagined I could’ve done hiring a guide or tagging along with a friend.

Did you take the Grand Isle Kayak Launch or the main marina launch?
Big cojones to get out before sunrise in a yak with all that boat traffic. -
Thanks guys. Is zebco recommended just as a good introductory rod because of price?
Or is it a good value? I.e. is it worth it to spend a few more bucks for something that’s durable?
Reason I’m asking is cause we’ve tinkered with a few kiddo rods and at the quality seems so crummy that at this point I think my 7 year old would be more succesful with something that just “works”.
Still learning so much about “fish and water behavior” from videos but I see some videos on Rigs coming up so excuse my ignorance at current.

As to your last point —- you would hope so—-but might be hard to teach an old dog new tricks. I am going to work on getting us to Port Fourchon instead.
