Well, in all fairness, they were caught everywhere in years past. The Freshening saw to the end of that.
If I were you, I’d look at where/how they did that in the past then look to replicate that now since the river has been behaving herself.
“My plan is to fish the docks this fall for the bigger ones.”
Where did you get this idea? Has that been done before? I think you should do it, but will probably discover there’s not much there. I could see some redfish, croaker and sheepshead coming out of there, but I don’t see it really being a game changer. Those docks are also exposed wide open to a northwest wind. Doesn’t seem like a good place for fish to hide from wave action after a cold front. Maybe I’m wrong, so go fish it anyway and learn.
Where I would look are those oyster reefs south of Marsh Island starting now. When it gets really cold I’d look at Shark Bayou, anywhere protected from a NW wind.
This will be a meticulous, unrewarding, kick-in-your-balls grind. You’re looking for a rare class of fish in a place not known to give them up more regularly than others (Lake Pontchartrain, Grand Isle and Venice, for example).
“The regular size matrix shad obviously doesn’t cut it because that is about all I fish and rarely catch anything over 20″”
They will 1,000% bite that 3″ bait. You’re just not on them. Find them then try playing with baits.

I may still be in town then, don’t know yet. I do have my kids that weekend, but maybe I can work something out with momma.

Just curious, why did you get out of hunting? I’ve always wanted to get into it, but found it easier to focus on fewer things than more things. So I just stuck with fishing and that has worked, especially seeing the best fishing is the same time most hunting is open.

I don’t have the answer to that question, but I bet Boat Stuf Slidell does.

You’re moving houses?
I don’t envy that. I hate moving. Especially heavy/bulky furniture.

Most excellent.
Also, some of those tracks are from 2016, so take them with a giant grain of salt. IIRC, I put the month/year in the track names.

Oh, I’m chuckling over here. lol

Well, I think you guys should go immediately. Begin looking now.
Funny thing: I just consigned the Tracker at Boat Stuf. I got the motor and trailer overhauled and everything runs great on her, so the time to sell is now. For the past couple years I’ve meant to do that but get sucked in by the fall season, so now I’m just ripping the bandaid off.
I know the timing could be better, but it is what it is.
That and I have non-fishing pokers in the fire. First, I’m re-enlisting in the Marine Corps Reserves and will have to go to schools that I missed out on when I was active duty. These schools are very demanding ball kickers, physically speaking. So I have been in the gym and pool killing myself repeatedly and shooting until my hands bleed. lol I’m headed to the gym as soon as I’m done sifting through the latest posts.
And I’ve had a great opportunity fall in my lap that could take me out of town for the entire fall/winter season (I know….shoot me now), but it’s a really good employment opportunity that I’d be incredibly foolhardy to not take advantage of. It will help me get into that bay boat. But I also have to prep for that and have been spending lots of time with the family.
I’m also suffering from a delusion that if I don’t go fishing, I could maybe not catch the bug and not go friggin’ crazy. But feeling the cool air this morning, seeing the river clean up in sat imagery, etc. is driving me there already. lol
So, I don’t have the Tracker, but if I get time, I could hop in with one of you guys if that’s cool.

and throw a BIG topwater
another reason topwater can do well is not because it’s topwater, but because it can get over the top of grass in those grassy ponds, and not get hung up or drag grass on the hooks.
This video is a good example of that

Ahhhh, that makes sense now. Okay, well give it a try. Beat it up!
