I think this trip is a great opportunity to further validate the theory that Speckled Trout prefer deeper, stable water temperatures during the winter pattern. And it’s even more awesome because you have the opportunity to do it pretty much during a cold front coming through.
The fact that they were pale when you caught them already helps that theory, not that it needs any help, I’m just saying. This could just build upon that more and probably make some great content.

Great report! I love quick easy trips like that. Catching huge numbers is never my goal so much as it is finding where fish are holding for future trips. Thanks for posting!

Holy smokes! Bro. What an epic trip.

Thank you for this! Looking forward to your full report. My Venice trip will be this Sunday instead of tomorrow. I’ve got a buddy who has been wanting to catch big trout and he can’t go tomorrow, so we will be there Sunday. I’ll post a plan to hopefully build on what you did today!
Tomorrow I’ll be hitting Lake Pontchartrain for a few hours after I take my kids to school.

Let’s go! Your report from tomorrow will decide where I fish Wednesday and/or this weekend. And I’m dying to fish Venice again, so no pressure!

Yeah, I’m with you on that. I feel like my casting rods keep getting shorter and shorter lol.

One of my initial thoughts too were the weight of the lure it could throw, as you mentioned. Surprisingly enough after looking at the rod specs, it is rated to throw a heavier lure and is rated for a heavier line than the 6’3 Daiwa Tatula rod I broke. Both rods are the same power (medium) and action (fast). I found that interesting.
I’ll definitely be doing a comparison on my next trip. Thanks for your input!
