I’m talking about back in the late 90s and early 2000s. That’s back when a few people were catching near state record trout by Hwy 11 bridge and consistent limits on the Causeway. I lived less than 10 minutes from the Frenier launch so it was easy to go right out to the powerlines and catch a mess. At first, there were just a few of us, but word got around pretty fast that you didn’t have to go all the way to the other side of the lake to catch a good mess of trout. All I had then was a 14ft flat and a few bags of saltwater assassins, electric chicken color, and some cheap poles. Those powerlines will produce, but the conditions need to be pretty dang near perfect. Back then, I remember we were having multiple years of drought conditions and the water got real clear and pretty salty that way. I would bet, on years where not much water comes through the pins in the spillway, you’d be able to do pretty good on those western powerlines. I kinda miss that area. Most of the time you would have it all to yourself. Pick up 2 to 5 trout at one powerline and then move down to the next and possibly do it again. I bet Devin is spot on about sonar, but I never had it. All we would do is figure out the pattern at one powerline, and it would be the same at every one. One thing that was strange back then. You could go to a powerline, fish it till you wouldn’t catch anything, move to the next, and someone would come up right behind you when you leave, and have the same exact results as you, catching a few right where you were. And the same thing when you would come in right behind someone else leaving the poweline in front of you. Oh, one more thing, some powerlines were always better than others. You’ll figure that out the more you go.

I remember that trip like it was yesterday. She still ask’s to go fishing every time she comes back home and every trip is better than the last one. It will never be about “catching fish” anymore for you when she goes. Sure, you’ll want her to catch, but for you, it’s all about the time spent with her.

Glad I ran into this discussion. I’m looking for a good gps, sonar unit and I was all in on a Helix 10. Sincerely rethinking that. Sounds like Lowrance is the preferred brand of accomplished anglers.

That sounds like a perfect day on the water. Can’t ask for better. Wow

If I could only fish one place, it would be the MRGO. Almost anytime of year you can find fish somewhere along the length of that beast. Sounds like it was a fun trip without having to run all over.

One more item of note. Only one fish had eggs. One of the 19″ trout. All the rest were males. One of my guilty pleasures in life is fried trout roe. Back in the day, I would actually hang out by the cleaning tables at then, Breton Sound Marina, and mop up on roe when people were about to toss it. Back then, people weren’t releasing the big girls as much, and I would fill a gallon ziplock with them big giant roe pouches. I wonder how many people out there savor trout roe like I do?

I just ordered 4 more of those same lures. Crazy, they range in price from $14.99 to $8.99. I just ordered 4 more online. It’s the KVD Strike King 300 elite in Table Rock color. It reminds me of a little speckled trout and it has been really good for me in some recent trips. It worked well on trout, bass , and a couple of reds. That fuel issue keeps bugging me. I want to get it completely resolved before my daughter gets back in town for her birthday trip. Probably the universe telling me to get a membership to seatow. She is coming in for a couple of late June trips and that means going outside for trout. I would hate to get stranded on the outside. Anyway, if I get the chance, I will try to put together a video of the past few trips. Hard to do with being so busy.

Thanks. I have a real appreciation for how you make and produce your videos. It takes a lot of effort

I absolutely agree with everything you said. The thing is, Todd’s video came out that day, and if it weren’t for my motor giving me a reason to pause, I would have been there one day before everyone else. Also, that morning was probably the last opportunity for that particular shore line, for at least a little while, due to the wind change. I don’t follow reports like that(chasing yesterday’s news). Your plan to use old reports is spot on. I used to do that all the time in the hay day of Rodnreel and Louisiana Sportsman. Those were some fun times. I never posted much, but I sure did learn a lot. I learned about places I never knew existed. Your forum has a little of that nostalgic feel to it. I hope it grows.
That jerk bait will be missed, but I have just purchased 4 more identical ones so the game will go on.
I don’t really care about numbers when I fish. Don’t get me wrong, I like a good catch but even 15 trout is way more than I usually keep. I have my feelings about the current regulations and let’s just say, I didn’t agree with the last changes, but I also haven’t kept 25 trout since the 1980s, and back in those days, 3 ice chest FULL was a normal day out. We had a camp in Fourchon then and we would damn near sink the boat at “The Rocks” at the end of Belle Pass. We would go out there in a 15ft Cajun Special with a 50 Merc and fish like it was no ones business. I remember almost meeting my maker more than once at the wake of a Charlie Hardison deep sea charter or some crew boat that put the hammer down early heading out. Yep, times are different. Much more “refined” group of sportsman out there these days. The young guys better be happy they have someone like you to teach them.
