Man yall killed it. That’s one of those trips that spoils you, but honestly think about how miserable the post-front fishing would be without the jubilee. Just a bunch of dead fish and cold ass weather.

Just got back. I’ll post a report. They were in 5-7 feet in the canal.

New LAFB Lesson: How to make new friends 101
I grew up with a ton of dudes that became more sucessful than me so that certainly helps.
Outside of that group, I talk about fishing a ton. My kids school has a bunch of functions, galas, birthday parties, sporting events. When I small talk I’m talking about fishing. I meet all types and if I was looking for new friends with sportfishers here’s what my strategy would be:
1. Find common ground. Common ground is the foundation of any relationship. We do it subconciously already (they are my age, in my industry, dress like me, whatever). Start with softballs. Where you from? Any kids? What type of work do you do? Then I pivot into, any good fishing in [insert home town]? Or just what do you guys do when you’re not partying at [insert wherever yall are]? If you go on vacation, look for spots with marinas. Walk the dock and strike up a conversation.
“How many tuna did yall catch today?”
“I was told the [insert boat name] had the freshest sashimi in town. Is that true?”
“Are you guys hiring part time deckhands?”
2. Barter. If you find someone that fishes for pelagics let them know you’ll trade them a fishing / hunting / camp trip (whatever you can offer with whatever you have) for an offshore trip. If you have nothing to offer, lay yourself bare,
“If you ever need a deckhand…”
“If you ever need someone to wash the boat…”
“If you ever need someone to show up with tacos…”
Just let me know.
Exchange contact info. Invite them to get togethers. Be friendly.
3. Be cool. Be flexible, offer to chip in for gas, show up with food/drinks, go out of your way to show your appreciation for the opportunity. Once you guys get comfortable tell them you’d love to do a tournament and if they ever need help to keep you in mind.
I’ve made a bunch of different friends in random ways and many of those were at my wedding 13 years ago and I’ll be at their funerals.
Making friends is easy, keeping them gets difficult, especially with a wife/kids/jobs and all of lifes other responsibilities.
Hope this helps.
And holler at me if you want to go fishing, I’ll bring tacos. 😉

I really don’t want to pop your balloon here but I gotta warn ya.
Having worked on a billfish/tuna charter boat in my teens and from feedback from several friends most boats(not all) do not allow customers to hook the fish. You can probably guess the reasons.
For the boat I worked on, we needed a good hookset as we would could waste a lot of fuel backing down on a lipped fish. Also there’s a lot of coordination between the crew and captain during the fight and most is at the beginning and end.
So really the customer helps reel. Most of the time you’re taking turns. Tuna is great, and a lot of boats have a policy where half the fish goes to the boat. It is really so much fish, you end up giving most of it away unless you have a dedicated deep freeze.
The best way to experience it is via a friend with a sportfisher doing tournaments. Captain buys in, needs a crew he can direct, and you’re part of that crew. But its work.
This is why inshore tarpon is so appealing to me. You get to seek out monster fish that fight, jump, and pull you around. You can troll for them like tuna & billfish or just chill in the middle of the lake and wait for them to show up. I can’t wait to chase them again this summer.

I’m aware of MODIS. Devin had mentioned it’s being phased out and to use Geosphere instead. Just not sure where/how.

Do you want these videos to blow up?
Do you want the youtube videos to drive traffic to the blog or drive revenue? If it’s the latter, I think it’s a slippery slope. Most of the guys I know that do content professionally have to do gimmicky stuff to get the algo feeding them to the top (which I know you’re well aware of the digital attention casino).
There’s 2 guys you should check out, Bama Saltwater (206k subs) & BamaBass (1.07M) on yt.
They’re different fishing genres but I’ve noticed the algo is rewarding both of them heavily.
Both have that folksy-southern-aww-shucks-most-viewers-are-probably-wearing-a-XXXXL-Disney-character-t-shirt feel, but Bama Saltwater sort of pivoted from pure inshore to mainly offshore and I think the reason is offshore content gets more views. For me watching (and doing it all my life) it’s the same trip every time -snapper, snapper, trigger, Oh let’s troll for a King, snapper, snapper, B-liner, OH we must’ve hooked an AJ, they’re out of season.
BamaBass has something like 24 -1M+ videos. And they are nothing special. Bass fishing is obviously the most popular type given they are everywhere. I think where he really killed it was seeing people’s interest in evolving projects. He built a small pond in his backyard and that series blew up. He’s rolling in so much content revenue he bought property and built this 5 acre pond with probably the most amount of electrical surveillance and automation in a 100 mile radius. He sounds like Tom Boddett, but the motel 6 is actually a massive barndominium housing his toys overlooking a stocked pond and hundreds of acres of hunting land.
I freaking love the long-form uncut fishing trips. It looks like yt algo bumped the move from highly edited content to longform and then tapered the reward system for whatever reason. I think looking at your most popular videos, the trend is around what seems to be transition periods where people are dusting off their center consoles and trying to figure out where the fish are now.
I find the algo rewards the quirky not everywhere stuff which I feel like you do – i.e. – White poles, what does it mean? / Fish kill 2025 / How to fish for Tripletail / etc. But maybe it’s not gimmicky enough for them. And I feel like they reward consistency. Which….you’ve been uploading every week. I don’t know. I don’t have 5 followers, and you have 15k+ so what do I know?

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND an older Bass boat over a flat boat.
-They still draft nothing.
-They’re more stable for standing.
-They’re cheap and plentiful.
-The older ones usually have older trolling motors with foot controls that still work after 40 years, and will probably work another 40.
-They’re fast and comfortable
-They’re easy to fully redo(I rebuilt mine in 1 week)
-They’re stealthy and catch fish(I’ve caught bass, reds, trout, sheepshead, flounder, drum, and tripletail on mine)
-You wont bash your brains out with a little chop
-You can run wooded bayous without the fear of sinking.
I’ve got my eye on one in BR that I was gonna flip but if you’re interested, let me know.
Also, if you wanna borrow a boat and feel like running to Mobile to grab one, you can borrow mine to test it out.
