I get asked this all the time at work.

For me it’s all the things mentioned in this video, but also it’s pattern recognition which appeals to whatever version of the spectrum I’m on.(notice the number of former wall st/corporate guys become guides)

I also enjoy the fact that no matter how far I go in life (or not go) I can always fish. My boat is small, inexpensive, and can be repaired by me. That’s important because I used to surf and can’t anymore because my shoulder loves to dislocate and that really hit me hard. So when I get older I’ll still be able to fish.

I’ve fished my whole life. My ancestors lived on a small island off the coast of Denmark for 500 years and everyone in my family fishes. It’s 2nd nature. Usually you do something, get your fill and you’re good for a while. I fished for a whole month and it just made me want to fish more.

It’s not something I dwell on. Maybe it’s a destructive addiction that takes focus away from work and family but I involve my kids(who also love it). I don’t question it, I just do it.

So we have snapper on lock. They are very easy to find, and easier to catch. The good thing (or bad, depending on how you look at it) is the season may end very soon.

I ran some numbers in chatgpt and here’s what it said:

Red (fast fishing, ~60k/week): Quota hit around Sept 6–7, 2025.

Orange (average pace, ~48k/week): Quota hit around Sept 13–14, 2025.

Blue (slow fishing, ~30k/week): Quota hit around Sept 28–Oct 1, 2025.

Green X: Current status as of Aug 17, 2025 (720,127 lbs landed).

Black dashed line: Total quota (894,955 lbs).

Interpretation: Unless harvest slows dramatically, Louisiana’s red snapper season will likely close sometime between Sept 6 and Sept 14, 2025, with LDWF typically announcing closure 1–2 weeks in advance when landings approach 90–95% of quota.

Oh that won’t happen. Plus I have a good network of people that send me intel so I can’t stop now. I have a customer in Angola(the country, not the prison) that has invited me to go catch them in January so I may have an all-expense paid trip to go get one but ideally I can get one locally as well.
