Jealous of that trip! I have a KML of platforms within ~20miles that I don’t mind sharing – it’s stuff straight from an NOAA chart. Message me your email on here or facebook, and I’ll send if interested. I made it out about 15 miles summer before last and caught a bunch of sharks and one undersized snapper, but really only gave it an hour or two as it was the day I was leaving. I think my weights were too light, and I was using mostly mullet caught inshore – maybe frozen squid would have done better.
Keep is posted! I’ll be heading that way first weekend of June.

Excellent! Glad to hear that reef had a few – I’ve tried it a couple times without luck.

Here’s a comparison I did back in 2021 when I was buying one for what it’s worth. I heard recently that the Simrad GO series is no longer being manufactured, so those remaining are at a discount price. I wound up with the GO9 as they had a sale that brought the price down to on par with other 7” screens – if you can wait, there are savings of a couple hundred to be had by waiting for a sale. I’ve been happy with the GO9 – easy to import waypoints and tracks. Nice having two card slots – one for Standard map and one for your own data – although can be a pain to access on the rear of the unit if you flush mount on a center console. It’s possible to upload your own satellite imagery as well if you spend time on the computer putting it together.
I’d suggest a similar comparison of currently available models will make your preference clear quickly.

What weight jighead were you using? Sure you’re getting to the bottom?
Keep after em!

Plenty of birds working and some shrimp jumping. Only gafftop under birds so far. Definitely needed the ‘stay protected’ plan today, but reds didn’t cooperate today. Will try another area tomorrow. Full report to follow.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Weather looking more challenging than when I originally posted. Will definitely be thinking on plans to stay protected, including plan redfish.
Report to follow after the weekend. Maybe I’ll give some short updates on this thread.

Ultimately, your strategy will pay dividends with time. You’ll revisit some of the spots with the same results and some with different – some will transition to ‘go-to’ or ‘why bother.’ Fishing from the kayak, you’ll probably learn the water way better than most.
“Redfish are so fun” – buddy, you wait until you find em sight fishing one day if you haven’t experienced that so far!! You’ll be hooked.

PS thanks to Boyce and JonFisher for your day-of reports that influenced my trip plan! While I didn’t slam them like Boyce or find the reds like Jon, I had a good time fishing stuff I hadn’t tried before!

Lolol AT4! Hitting the water momentarily. See yall out there

I’ll be posted up on Treasure Isle for the weekend fishing Saturday and Sunday (maybe even Friday afternoon). As for where specifically – I agree it’d sure be nice to get a nice satellite image in the next couple days but I’m not counting on it. Will come up with a plan.
As for Grand Isle – two folks with camps down there have reported tough time with trout in the past week but some success with reds in the marsh. Maybe settled winds will help the water clean up and turn the trout on. Shrimp run/birds reportedly not working yet.

“Also me: NOW I AM BECOME DEVIN, DESTROYER OF TROUT.” Lolol
Awesome trip!!! I’ll be out there this weekend. Any more on the pattern you found – e.g. on the bottom of 8’ of water, paddle tail on jig head or more like 3’ flat, paddle tail under popping cork?

If it’s going to heartbreak you to lose it at the boat, use the net – just have it ready for use and net as quickly as possible. My personal method – if it feels/looks less than 18″, I’m flipping. If it’s bigger/pulling drag, I’m running for the net.
Good luck!
