  • Sounds great! Only got to fish for a couple of hours today. No bites. Lightning storm ran me back home.

  • Thank you. That was a great video. Going to go try out Dog River this evening.

  • Thanks for the report from Alabama. I live in Alabama (about an hour north of Mobile) and just recently started inshore fishing. I would love to learn how to fish the rivers. Any suggestions on the best way to attack Dog River this time of year?

I have never been to Venice, but I think your report has now convinced me. I am not sure if I will get a chance this year, but definitely looking to make a trip ASAP. Thanks for the great report!

Weekend Report: We did try a ton of those spots on the map. Never really got on the fish at any of them. Caught 1 keeper trout and one bull red at the I-10 bridge in Pontchartrain. We didn’t go any further out in the main lake than that. Fished the South Shoreline out of Chef’s Pass and caught a few bass and a big black drum. In Lake Catherine, we caught a few slot reds on the North Shoreline, ran across a school under birds right across the lake from Island Marina, and caught 9 keeper trout, 3 slot reds, and 1 bull red right at dark on Friday evening. We caught a rat red and a few flounder at a bayou leading into Weems Island. Couldn’t go past the mouth because it was posted land. Also caught a 20-inch flounder at the mouth of Counterfeit Pass, where it meets the Rigolets. Found a steady bite of throwback trout under birds at Unknown Pass on Sunday morning at daylight, but the wind picked up by 8 and we headed back to Alabama. It was not a great trip as far as numbers go, but it was our first time in this area, and we learned a lot about how things look and how the water moves in this area for future trips. Will be headed to Delacroix in a couple of weeks. Hopefully, we will come home with a little more meat.

After completing most of IF 101 and reading reports and looking at conditions, I have developed a plan that will hopefully work out for tomorrow. We are going to try to be on the water mid-morning depending on the thunderstorms passing through. If it isn’t too rough, we plan to hit the bridges and trestles ( I didn’t mark them on the map because they were obvious locations to me). Afterwards, hit the mouth of chef’s pass and the shoreline (TRT 1,2,3). (If it is too rough, we plan to hit some of the locations off of the ICW or Chef’s Pass to avoid the wind). If we haven’t found trout by then, I am sure we will want to try for redfish. I marked a couple of ponds on the map RF 1 and 2, but I am unsure if those will be good spots or not. Any information on this plan would be appreciated, as well as any other possible redfish ponds? We plan to use the main waterways to travel, as I haven’t had enough time to research safe routes through the marshy areas properly.

Day 2 we plan to head to the castle, mrgo flats, and chalmette wall depending on how day 1 goes. Thanks for any input that you guys can give a rookie to this area.

We were in my friends boat with no spot lock. Threw out an anchor but it was still drifting us pretty good (I guess that answers that the water was ripping pretty good.) There were shrimp jumping off and on. Steady flock of birds for the first hour or so.

You are correct. It is always best to have a plan, and I will definitely have one for delacroix. I wish I had more information on how to fish those bridges around Pontchartrain before we went because I had never tried that before this weekend. I saw where many people posted online they had caught some nice trout there this past week, so we did give it a try after striking out elsewhere. Looking forward to continuing to learn through these courses.

Thank you. RF1 is in goose pond. I could see the prop marks from GED. I was hoping there would be enough water to sneak in there and maybe sight fish. It looks like it has drains on both sides, so I was hoping some water would be moving as well. Do you have any recommendations for redfish spots relatively close with a popping cork or some plastics?

Thank you. I will try to research on GED to find some of those flats and give those a try as well. That would be great, as it is very close to where we are staying. Maybe we will see you out there tomorrow.

Thanks for your response. I hope to finish 101 before we leave out Friday morning so that should help, but I was just looking for any help I could get before then.

Thank you for your response. We are staying at Island Marina so we just figured we would launch out of there everyday, but I am sure if there is a better location close then we could travel to launch every morning. I will be fishing out of an Xpress H20 Bay with a 115 SHO. I just joined the elite club today so I am working my way through the 101 class right now. Is Lake Catherine deep enough to run across? I was thinking with the falling tide, we might could fish some of the bayous that spill out of the lake. We can use any type of rig or bait. I am relatively new to inshore fishing so most of my experience has come in the marsh with popping corks and live shrimp, but I have recently began throwing some plastic as well.
