Did it work fine before?

I was gonna ask what kind of catfish they were and now I see that they’re sailcats. Those are great eating, just a PITA to handle.
Honestly, I’m probably gonna meat haul those bad boys. They’re so easy to see on sonar with those big, hard heads. Really bright returns. They kinda spread out, too. So their schools are easy to differentiate.
I eat fish every day when I’ve got them, and it’s either that or buying chicken, so why not just keep the catfish? Because someone might think I’m some kinda loser? Well, I make a living doing this and wrote a book how to do it, so I’m way past that. lol
Let us know how those sail cat fillets are. Any worms in them?
If you give the “okay” then I’ll probably whack the daylights out of them on my next trip out. Just try to sink the boat in trash fish. LOL
Anyway, I think moving to the east side of Lake Borgne was a good idea. Good move on your part. I’m not sure where there’s a lot of trout holding over there, I guess somewhere closer to the MRGO.
Maybe @Boyce ran the tracks/spots I shared earlier in another post and he’ll have a good report for that. Hopefully.
Either way, great report, thanks for posting. The wind was tough, and that just makes things harder. You’ll have an easier time of it when the wind lays down.

You did a great job given the circumstances. Now you know where not to go.
I hope to get out that way sometime soon. All the fish that were in Decade have got to push out to the outside somewhere around there.
Great report, thanks for posting!

” I mentioned it in another post but LAFB members took 2nd and 3rd place against some pretty stiff competition.”
You’re too kind, but it’s the members who make this forum great. I just slapped together some WordPress magic and y’all took the ball and run it to the end zone every week. Thank you so much.
“Funny enough, I actually learned about RO20 through a video Devin posted a while fishing the trestles back in the day with Adam Shields. He deserves a lot of Credit for getting this movement started in LA.”
That’s all I ever wanted. Again, give the masses the ball and let them run it down the field. There’s a lotta good folks here in Louisiana, and some have found their way to RO20.
“Finished the day with about 22 keepers but the only big fish were that 22.5” and the 19”.”
That’s pretty friggin’ good. I’d go to those spots you caught the bigger fish and wait ’em out all day. Grind City. Which you did. lol
” We also heard a good report of the Long Rocks from someone staying next to my buddies camper. They supposedly caught numbers and some bigger fish.”
That sounds about right.
Great report, thanks for posting!

Great report, thanks for posting it.
Love the bass boat, too!

Thanks for taking time to post a report. You didn’t have much time to figure something out, but it was worth the try.
I’d definitely look that motor over real hard. I’m assuming you only put non-ethanol in it? It sounds like water separation. Do you have a fuel/water separator? Anything in the bottom of it?
Get those carbs rebuilt in time to take advantage of the fishing being good.

“we somehow managed to salvage a trout day even after we had moved on to plan redfish.”
I’d be happy with that.
“It felt like a very transitional day.”
That’s exactly the vibe I got reading your report.
“and I don’t expect the pattern to be the same.”
That’s smart. I do think the bird pattern is kicking off and that’s something you’re gonna wanna keep an eye out for.

Great report! I love to see a plan coming together. Way to knock it out of the ball park. Also, great use of this forum to achieve your fishing success. That’s what I’m talking about.
Envisioning this forum working is one thing, seeing it happen in real life made my weekend. Thank you!

Given the conditions this is what I would’ve done if I had to fish that same area. Note how all the spots are oriented out of the wind and, as often as I can, I am staying out of the wind running there.
There are definitely some rough patches along those routes, anywhere there’s enough runway for a 20 knot SE wind to make chop. But however bad those are, they are all brief and more protected compared to the unholy ass whipping you got going face-first down the MRGO.
I probably would’ve caught a limit of reds at Redfish 1 and been pleasantly completely out of the wind, since that canal runs near-perpendicular to a SE wind and is protected on each side by high spoil and trees.

The day @timbofishn went the wind was blowing out of the NE at a pretty good clip (10-15 knots) but that put him in the lee of the land moreso than a 20 knot SE wind would provide. The day @olw3rd went the wind blew out of the SE as well but it was blowing 5-8 knots, way more doable than 20. Plus he was done by the time the wind picked up later in the day.
Attempting what they did would have been a good idea if the wind were blowing across the MRGO (not straight down it) or laid down or both. But when the conditions changed, that was your cue to do something else, even though they whacked the fish.

Okay, so then it’s not your install. We can cross that off the list.
The next thing to do is check components while we wait on Garmin to see what they have to say. Hopefully their customer service is as good as Humminbird.
Do you have spare cables you can swap out? Do you have a unit you can swap out?
Next thing: I’d check those connections for the tiniest amount of corrosion.
Thing after that: is your unit getting good voltage? Some of these units will act wonky if they’re not getting good voltage and *clean* electricity, which I do not know how to measure/detect.
I know my units started behaving better after I put them on their own battery separate from the house/cranking battery.
You can test this by swapping out batteries. Check the battery the units are currently using for full cells. Pop that plastic cap off the top and if the cells look dry then fill them with distilled water. Do not use tap water. Wear protective wear when you do, a drop of batter acid flying in your eye will ruin your day. You do not want that smoke.
In the past I’ve had a Humminbird unit that was by itself defective and had to be sent in to get fixed. It came back a couple weeks later working like new. I backed up all my data and wiped the unit before sending it. You never know, there could be an LAFB-fan at Humminbird and he ain’t getting my spots/tracks. LOL

You just signed the death warrant of a lot of sail cats.
If the water looks lower next time you go out it’s because umpteen-zillion of them have been removed to make space for far more loveable fish.
-
You won’t be fishing the same spots, but it’d be the same area and you’d be out of the wind. I think you could make it happen doing that. I’d also look hard at Redfish 1 and the pond at the top of it.

Okay, so you really did do your homework, here’s how I would categorize your spot:
Category #1: I would rather fight Mike Tyson than fish these spots:
Fish 1, 2, 3, 8, 9, 13, 14, 11, 24 and 18
Mike Tyson will mercifully knock me out much faster than the brutal ass whipping I would take over a period of hours fishing those spots. No and hell no.
Category #2: these spots are either “doable” or protected from the wind:
Fish 5, 6, 7, 10, 12, 15, Structure, and 23.
Your route getting there is the worst one you could have possibly picked. I am assuming the yellow route is how you’d arrive, then you’d boat from there. That whole way you are facing into that brutal 20 knot wind. I’m going to make another reply to your post showing what I would’ve done, routes, spots and all.
