I am very pumped to see a Breton Sound report. I’ve been itching to hear from an Elite member as to what’s going on out there.

“The cut through or “Boogie’s Way” now has (or maybe always had, not sure) PVC poles on both sides of the deeper parts of the bayou (can be seen on GED), the depth ranges from 4 – 8 feet out to Lake Of Two Trees. So no issues running that as long as you stay between the PVC poles.”

Very good intel. Thank you for that.

“I did however, copy Captain Devin’s KML file he posted and pasted it on top of my plan because it had a few rigs I didn’t have, the names of the rigs, and the general location of the dope boat which I didn’t have.”

You’re welcome! Excellent, glad to know that’s being put to good use. That’s the whole point of this forum! I love it!

“First stop was the rig in Lake Fortuna with no luck.”

    That’s not particularly surprising.

“From there we headed further out stopping at Five Wells, 32 Block, Compressor, and Hashtag with ZERO luck.”

My anxiety would have been full-throttle peaking at that point in time. I would’ve been a mess, that Mercury would be screaming and the throttle buried through the console. lol

Also, I just found on Navionics that someone called that the “Hashtag” rig. It may be called something else. I don’t remember. I wish I kept better reports from back in the day.

“On the way in I could tell my buddy was bummed that we didn’t catch anything so I decided to try one last place closer in that I knew he could at least fight a bull red or something big which was the Long Rocks.”

That’s it. Don’t give up. Especially if a spot like that is on the way. Why not try it?

    Now, a few things:

First, that spot you fished is the exact same spot I fished and caught a limit of 75 speckled trout with customers back in 2013.

The same thing that happened to you happened to us: we ran all over Creation, fishing a lot of the same spots you did, and didn’t catch much. Then we tried that break in the rocks and it was on like Donkey Kong. I called over a few other charter captains in the area: Salty Dog, Fish With The King, and others and we all caught fish. It was amazing.

Now, I forget the tide on that day, but it was definitely moving. It was also overcast. I am guessing it was not overcast for you. But you still caught fish in deeper, moving water. Man, that’s where they’re gonna be if it’s gonna be a late bite.

So was it hard overcast? How hard was the tide moving? What bait did you see the fish eating if any at all?

After that, good call not going to Breton Island. It’s a community hole anyway.

Did you find the Dope Boat?

Did you try fishing a cork at the rigs at all?

Did you fish live shrimp at all?

Something else to consider is that this fishing trip kinda supports my “most water, least fish” theory that you can read about here on LAFB.

Basically, it’s the idea that now, here in the Saltening, there’s more water for fish to be in than there has been in years, and there’s fewer fish to occupy that water.

So it’s kinda like my badass Mandeville trips from October last year: you will have to cover water to find the Mother Lode.

And that’s what you did on this trip. Very neat.

It’s interesting because I thought of that 2013 trip the other day and figured I should post about it here in the Community. LOL Looks like you figured it out on your own.

All I can say is great report, thank you so much for posting, I hope you post more!

    That is fascinating.

Yes, that’s a channel that runs from Lafitte all the way to the GoM.

On imagery from 1985 the spoil on either side is barely visible. It’d be interesting to graph it. Submerged rocks are just the best.

I tried pulling up Navionics to see if there are any notes for that area, but it’s being wonky right now.

Thank you so much, for sharing this. Maybe @WestbankJosh will check it out.

Some people fish it and catch a mixed bag and that more or less has been my experience.

But, I think what you ought to do is take a hard look at the reef to the east of there.

    It’s marked by a white buoy at about 30° 8.817’N 89° 22.856’W

Attached is a .KML for all of Louisiana inshore artificial reefs. I didn’t make it, just got it off LDWF’s website. It could be put together better, but it works well enough.

During the summer when it gets hot, if that water ain’t moving that’s a wrap. Rarely has this ever not been the case for me.

You did what you could. You already know where the fish are gonna be next time you get out there. Based on your reports, I’d say you’re on them.

Excellent report, thank you for posting!

Finally, I’ve been waiting on this report!

“We would pick up 3 keepers and a few throwbacks over the next 2 hours.”

    Man, that sounds rough.

“What looked like it would be a tough trip was saved with some last spot magic!”

Some times you just need to keep going and that’s all there is to it.

“I decided to throw a matrix lemonhead on a 3/8 jig and BOOM it was on.”

That’s interesting. Were you in deeper water than the oysters you’ve been fishing? Sure does sound like it.

“We picked up 30 keepers in less than an hour and had to leave them biting!”

Man, you are dad of the year. That’s some good stuff. Good job letting the kid catch ’em. I’m glad it paid off for you guys!

Could you tell if the shrimp were browns or whites? I’m not sure it really matters, it seems like you’re on a steady pattern.

Great report, keep up the good work!

Yeah, in July I’d be rolling knee deep into the Sound, if I wanted specks. Those poles you ran past are good to check for triple tail, though. Otherwise, EBM has been a dink festival. I’d go to the rigs past the Long Rocks out of Hopedale if I wanted trout, or go to Grand Isle.

    Great report, thanks for posting!

Wooooo! A V-Bay report! Most excellent. That place kicked ass last year and looks like it is again this year. The Saltening is upon us!

    Great report, thanks for posting!

For anyone interested, I detailed this exact area (and running SW Pass) inside the Planning section of the new Inshore Fishing 101.

Mike, that could be good, but if I were you I’d look hard at headed down the Twin Pipeline and fishing those islands for redfish. There will be some “dirty” river water but don’t let that deter you.

This .KML file I made here will give you some good ideas (or just fish those exact spots).

Or, at the bare minimum, keep those as a backup for Plan Redfish in the event the trout spots further out aren’t productive.

That area is turning on and will only get better. I saw Caleb Sumrall is running charters out there, which says a lot: if the trout fishing is so good that a bass angler is guiding trips out of there then the fishing must be good.

Last year V-Bay kicked a lot of ass and was restored to her former glory, what I hope to see happen across Louisiana in the Saltening.

This is a great report and I appreciate you taking time to post it. IIRC, you’re headed to Venice next. Good luck out there!

“oh your trailer doesn’t have brakes”

WHAT?! lol Like what the hell?

I’ve only ever gotten parts from them, but based upon what you said I wouldn’t go back.

I ran into the same problem as you: I couldn’t find anyone I could pay who would care as much about my trailer as me, so I did it myself.

Absolute pain in the ass, but then I know the work is good.

When I did the carpet myself, I just got a roll off Amazon (but I’m sure BoatStuf on Old Spanish Trail sells it, too), got some stainless steel staples, double wrapped that bad boy and stapled the underside of it like closing someone up post-surgery.

You could just bring it to Boat Stuf, but they’re backed up by 3-4 weeks right now. (I’m waiting to take my Tracker there).

You could try Cypress Cove on Pontchartrain Drive. They just did my Yamaha F70. I know that’s not a trailer, but I did have them change the chain on my trailer, and I was happy with the work they did on both items.

It’s nice doing a job “extra” when I do it myself, but these days I’d rather pay someone to do it. So I don’t blame you if you don’t want to. Take it to Cypress Cove and be crystal clear what your issue is.

No problem. I appreciate you participating in the forum.

If I were you, I’d hit that reef, but there are more to the east that are worth looking at.

There’s also one at the top of Lake Borgne that can be good. When it’s on fire, it’s on fire.

I shot a YouTube video out there a couple years ago.

Do you mean East Bay? If you started a new post about this very thing it would be a lot easier for others to pipe in. I’d love to help you make the best of your upcoming Venice trip!

It’s the canal that runs south from Terre aux Beouf down through 4 Horse all the way down to Pointe a la Hache. It’s pretty much one big canal now, but used to be two canals with a thin strip of marsh between them.
