I’m 99% positive that you must close the mouth and pinch the tail.
What Jonathan said is good practice. I especially do that because if I get stopped by LDWF and have short fish…well, that would be a bad look. Better safe than sorry! It’s not worth getting into trouble over a fish sandwich.

Hey Herb, thanks for posting a report. The fall fishing is just waiting to kick off, we just need the water temp to drop 5 to 10 degrees. It’s gonna happen.

Definitely try that northwest shoreline of Muscle Bay, especially that point due west of the rig that’s there. That can be a good spot, too.
No word on Martello that I know of other than the report I posted 2 or 3 weeks ago (not good).
Great report, thanks for posting!

Yeah, I know what that’s like! Man, I felt that.
“Total miles ran that day was 131 miles”
Ouch.
“I woke up the next morning to drive back and the wind had completely laid flat with an outstanding weather forecast in the area for the next week.”
Of course!
“Or wait until the middle of November to fish the area next time.”
Do that. You would have hit it just right if it weren’t for this warm spell. Water temp should be in the mid to low 70s, not low 80s.
That and wind like that never makes anything easier. It’s just a multiplier for a tough day of fishing.
Go back in November if that’s what makes you happy. I think you could have really good trout fishing in Lake Decade and the ponds north of Boudreaux could be crawling with upper slots and over slots.
But, if I were you, I’d go to Venice. There will be way more trout and reds there.
And, if the wind does blow, you will have places to hide there.
Great report, thanks for posting!

Tough trips happen and, to be fair, it’s only really the beginning of fall.
Congrats on getting through 101. It’s a lot of long-form content, but it has been condensed as short as possible to get the learning points across. I put a lot of time into writing a rough draft, editing, writing another draft, reading it over, editing it more, etc.
Sitting through those videos is vastly cheaper and easier than learning it how I did: the hard way. LOL
But you’re not done. Now it’s time to apply that knowledge. Bayou Bienvenue and that Greater NOLA area isn’t the worst place to fish, but we will pressure you to try new areas, especially Venice.
Great report, thanks for posting.

Just to be clear, you left the kids in the boat and hopped in the water for a free dive? That’s badass.

What an epic trip. Excellent report, and thank you for posting!

If my fly-out date gets pushed to the right, I will take you up on that. Thank you!

That is so badass! Way to hold the bar high, for you and your son!

That makes sense. I was about to say, “There’s no way they were hitting topwater in broad daylight with no overcast weather” lol
Man, I am so happy for you guys. Way to stick it out and make the trip epic. Sometimes you just gotta go past the 11th hour to make it happen. Good stuff. Thanks for posting!

Yeah, +1 on this. Especially at The Jump with water this warm? Hopefully that’s a foreshadowing of things to come.
Of course the fishing will be awesome this fall and for one reason: I won’t be here. I’m taking a helluva job opportunity and will be leaving town as soon as next week. I will probably be gone until February.
Same reason we didn’t have any hurricanes this year: I got a generator, 500 gallon propane tank and Starlink. So naturally I won’t get the chance to field test them, right? lol You’re welcome, Louisiana!
