“Question: Are you morally against braid/leader in spinning reels as well, or just on casting tackle?”

I use braid on spinning reels, almost exclusively. But spinning reels are used for different purposes over casting tackle: throwing heavier/clunkier rigs like popping corks, Heavy Drop Shots, Carolina rigs, etc.

Or lures that are so light they can only be reasonably cast using spinning tackle, such as crappie jigs used to catch speckled trout under dock lights at night.

Bumping this to the top for the planning file above.

I’d fish that when this strong SE wind calms down.

Bumping this to the top so you guys don’t get sucked into the Trestles this spring.

Do. Not. Get. Sucked. Into. Over. Pressured. Community. Holes.

    Go. Find. Your. Own. Fish.

    Thank. You.

Aaaand the jury is still out on this theory because on 3-2-26 it was a full moon all night with clear skies.

    I have no idea. lol

I will die not knowing what speckled trout are thinking.

“I witnessed many boats coming and going at all locations, insinuating that the bite was lackluster.”

Saw the same thing on 3/2. Everyone running trying to find them in the haystack.

But the needle is definitely there.

Man, I know you have your slip there in Shell Beach, but I’d strongly consider trailering somewhere else (like Pointe a la Hache) or simply making the run around to Hopedale Lagoon and run south from there.

    I would.

Good planning according to the conditions. I see spots that are picked out based on the strong SE wind and you are trying to fish out of it as much as you can, and get the wind to your back.

    Glory hallelujah.

With that said, I bet the aforementioned “rip” is going to lay along the tidal highway from Spots 1 to 10. That’s just been my experience over the years. If water looks cleaner on those northern shorelines and your picked out spots don’t produce, fish them.

“Spots are near where I might find the rip and in the lee. The wind might force me to sneak from spot 5 to 13 and skip everything on the SE portion of the loop – if that’s the case then I might have more time to make more observations and stops between spots on the return leg to oak river.”

    Bang. Agreed.

As for the drift sock, you probably won’t need it. Just fish your spots like normal. If the wind aligns, drift across the fishing spot. The fish will tell you. If you pick up one, cast back out and get another then you can probably power pole or spot lock and whack ’em. If not, and you keep drifting and catch another further down, then you should be drifting.

Look for diving birds in Pointe Fienne and Four Horse. Those should be turning on with shrimp very soon, but should only be happening at first daylight and/or during a falling tide (which you won’t have).

Still worth a look, especially in Fienne. Drift that bad boy and watch your graph.

Don’t be surprised to see a last squirt of white shrimp. But they could be browns. If you do see them, tell us which one they are!! That’s good info.

After that, I think you’re crazy for not looking further south. Hit points/tidelines along that north shoreline in Wreck and Third Bay.

I know that area hurt your feelings awhile back, but this time you’re approaching it from the north. Get in there.

The guy who does this for a living and recently crushed the daylights out of the trout is telling you where to go. Consider that.

I fished spot #5 and didn’t catch anything. Also fished a little further north on that shoreline and didn’t catch anything, though that is historically a good spring spot for trout and reds. It can be good during the fall, too! So keep that in your back pocket.

I’ve never done well in Adema, but I know folks who have. So it’s good to have it there in your plan.

The wind is gonna suck ass. Bring the biggest drift sock you can find to slow your drift down, or be ready to stick and pick with a shallow water anchor. Maybe stretch out if you plan on using a Cajun anchor lol

Otherwise, good luck! I think you’ve got this!

I’d also like to add that now I have found where fish are and what they are doing, I am very confident that I would find more in less time. This fishing trip I knew that it would be a long, relentless grind. But I also knew that once I figured them out I could find more.

Alas, I am boatless, so that is up to you guys. Y’all can do it. Make me proud.

Yeah, for the amount of $$$ I’d put into a kayak I’d rather just revamp the flatboat and call it a day. Don’t need something else taking up space in the garage.

And for what people spend on kayaks, they could get a beater aluminum flatboat that will run the marshes reliably. Maybe not conquer the River or Breton Sound, but something that floats and goes 25mph is plenty enough.

And if I did fish out of a kayak, given the accessibility, lack of barrier to entry and proliferation of kayaks, I’d never give away where I fish in that thing. Not even a hint. Ain’t no way.

This is such a good conversation. Getting out of the normal grind of things and getting a little more advanced here.

Okay, so using FC is great, and I do use it. But I would not recommend it for the Trestles starting out.

The reason why is that FC sinks. So as you let your lure drop the line more or less drops with it and is more likely to get snagged. Mono doesn’t sink and is more neutral buoyant, and will remain more straight up and down in the water column and less sideways. This keeps it off of snags.

Plus it’s cheaper. I bought a 1,000 yard (or something like that) spool in 2018 and am still using it.

I do use FC, but typically in very clear water and places where I need to make long casts and keep the jighead tracking along the bottom (because FC sinks).

I’ve also used FC for deep cranking (which is not an inshore application so much as it is a bass fishing application…..not something we do in the marshes) because the weight of the FC helps keep the crankbait down in the water column. That’s getting a little picky/technical, but I am using that example to illustrate a use of FC.

As for roll casting, you would just adapt from your sitting position. Consider that the point of roll casting is to keep the wind from catching the lure when standing on the bow of a boat, especially a boat where the bow is elevated, like my Tracker and most bay boats. But this is not the case for your kayak. You can still sidearm the jig to the Trestles or do some modified roll cast to suit your needs.

As you spend more time with the jig, casting it, working it, overall employing it, you will grow comfortable with it and managing a jig will become second nature. This will only come with experience. You will not reach the same level of 20 fishing trips’ worth of experience in just two.

The difference is that you will get there a lot faster than learning it the hard way and developing bad habits/training scars along the way.

I still put an emphasis on finding biting fish in the first place, rather than finding a few with lockjaw and trying to get them to bite.

    Bud, we already do that.

You’re more than welcome to join us with a planning post. If you don’t want to post it here, then I’m sure you’ll get the opportunity to do so at the meetup. Lots of good dudes who are cool as a ceiling fan will be there to share and collaborate.

That’s why I use MEGA Imaging. I can see the outline of the fish a lot better. Sometimes hyacinth does float past in the beam, but it’s an obvious blob. Fish have tails.
