Hey David, thanks for posting an intro. It’s great to have you here.

If I were you, I’d get started with Inshore Fishing 101 to learn the process to finding fish from scratch.

Now I understand you said you are in a kayak. Well, I’ve got news for you, that does not exclude you from exploring the marsh and catching fish. Not at all. What it changes is how you do those things.

With a kayak you have the option to combat launch in places boats can’t. I’m sure you’re physically fit enough to do so. If not, that’s a worthy goal.

It also has a small signature and low profile. You can get into awesome redfish ponds the rest of us can’t. Not to mention the reduced expense of going fishing.

There are other kayakers in here as well. I’d go out of my way to add them to your angler network. The effort will be worth it.

Hopedale and Grand Isle are both great locations, but I’d also consider combat launching off LA-23 near Venice, LA-1 in Golden Meadow and even off LA-300 out of Reggio/Delacroix. Same for the south shore of Lake Pontchartrain for jacks.

Last, but not least, the very best thing you can do is utilize this forum to plan your fishing trips. The more information you give, the more we can give back. There’s a slew of excellent planning posts in here to serve as an example to that end. We can really help you learn what you didn’t know you did not know before casting that first line.

    Welcome to the Community.

Nobody in Louisiana has checked the river and Geosphere as often as I have, which is several times a day. Literal mind games over here

That big dumb river runs my life. Is the slow fall really a necessary tease? lol Seriously, stop playing with my emotions. I am dying! lol

But yes, she calls. And when she does, we answer. TOTS shall lead the way!!!

    YESSSSSSS

I’ve been waiting patiently for a report like this. I had a feeling that the fish have been showing up.

I’m more or less between boats right now and believe me, it is killing me. It is a slow death from the inside out, so I shall live vicariously through you.

V-Bay and Venice are the two locations I’d really like to develop.

Great report and thanks for posting!

It is soul crushing to have spent so much time producing videos/content about this exact thing and to (repeatedly) see people telegraph they didn’t watch the video.

Right here at 2:28: https://www.lafbelite.com/lesson/if101-6-3/ inside that content I put entirely too much effort into. lol

Man, I’m just going to get a job. lol Might as well explain here before I finish filling out my resume:

Years ago the USACE put in weirs to change the flow of water in Biloxi Marsh for whatever reason. They’re wooden weirs that eventually decrapitated over time and are now hazards to navigation. They are sprinkled throughout Biloxi Marsh and GED homework goes a long way to identify them.

Of course, posting here like you did is also a great idea because one of us can chime in and say “hey, look out for this other weir”, like this one here at 29° 54.747’N 89° 33.265’W.

Or maybe I’m just some inshore autist who catalogs hazards inside his head like Rain Man does playing cards. I have no idea. lol

Better late than never! And I wouldn’t say this report is exactly “late” because it’s still the summer pattern and it will help in the future when people are inevitably fishing this time of year next year, then the next year, etc.

    Great report, thanks for posting!

Seeing 25 is about right for that area, so that’s good to hear. That’s better than what I was doing in Delacroix and down by the river in Pointe a la Hache this year, last year and the year before that.

    Great report, thanks for posting!

I’ve owned a couple aluminum boats, and I will say that the aluminum will eventually stretch and crack over time, especially production boats, especially It will only take 3 to 5 years. A good fiberglass boat won’t do this. If I were you, I’d look hard at fiberglass.

No T-top. It’s one more thing that can break, it’ll keep you from getting under bridges and they catch wind. Plus people love to hit them with rods when casting or setting the hook. T-tops are nice when it’s really hot out, but keep you from warming up during winter. Just say “no” to T-tops.

    “What features are a must-have?”

I’d have a spot-lock trolling motor before I had a shallow water anchor. A decent GPS is a given, good side imaging sonar is a boon. It really helps with situational awareness.

    “Power poles?”

They really don’t get in the way. They are very helpful for keeping the boat positioned in shallow water. It goes without saying that I wouldn’t be comfortable running a trolling motor in shallow water to spot lock. You’re just gonna kick up mud and be way too loud.

    Garmin is fine.

You will want an aluminum trailer. Most boats down here have these, but if you get steel it will rust.

After that, less is more. One reason bay boats are so expensive is because whiny, mentally weak, suburbanite dads need to have stupid things like cupholders, auto-quality trim, seat cushions or whatever BS their wives make them cave to. So boat manufacturers do the logical thing and make what people pay for. I don’t blame them, but gelcoat is a PITA to clean.

If you can’t tell, I hate bougie BS. That’s just my personal preference.

Something like a Blazer 2400 or Privateer Renegade are the kind of fiberglass bay boat that has stood the test of time and feature a rough finish that looks great even when dirty. Trout slime, crap, blood etc. clean a lot easier off of it.

Less is more. The more stuff you have on a boat, the more you will have to maintenance, repair and fix.

As for color, get white. Get something that can be seen from the air and looks like everybody else. I knew a guy that had a yellow boat and everybody always knew it was him. lol

I hate to sound like an uninformed dummy, but I think you can grab a gill and just pop it off. I guess if blood shoots everywhere, you did it. lol

There will probably be good jigging action in the river for redfish by then. I’d expect to pick up some hammer trout at Southwest Pass if it’s clean and green.

Yes, the white poles are marking a lane. It’s definitely big enough for a bay boat. That little lane has always been there, at least since I fished it as a kid in the 90s, and has grown wider over the years.

Ah yes, you asked that, my mistake.

Yes, it’s passable and I’ve taken it on plane with 22ft and 24ft bay boats. Idling is recommended, of course.

That cut on the right side has been there since the 90s, but has grown a lot more. Used to you just had to know about it, but some do-gooder put up the beloved white poles.

There’s (historically) been good fall/winter fishing back there in the past, but ever since 2015 I’ve just been waiting for it to turn on like I remember and it has not.

Maybe it’ll turn around this fall/winter.

Just off of it and elsewhere in the Biloxi Marsh.

I would plug them into GED or whatever you use to see their exact position. The above coordinates will also work in Google Maps.
