My thoughts as to why the trout were tough:

Well, we did just have that cold front. But when I look at the water temp drop in the river versus that of non-river locations (like Grand Isle….see attached), I’m inclined to believe that didn’t impact the fish as much as one would think.

My gut feeling is that they moved and we just didn’t find them. The one place we did find them was an absolute wretch to fish because it was a nightmare keeping the boat positioned. The swells, wind and current were tough.

I can’t really say what was going on at the other spots because I couldn’t see what was going on in the water column.

Maybe they bit later in the day at The Jump and we missed it. Who knows?

But, if I were to go back anytime soon, I’d definitely try elsewhere. I’d dedicate more time to Pass a Loutre, and even run upriver toward Buras and fish ledges up there. I’d also consider fishing the marshes of Pointe a la Hache. I’d also try West Bay. We did not fish there.

I would also try deep, still water. The docks at The Jump are a good example. Fish somewhere the current isn’t ripping so hard.

Also, bring plenty of extra rigs and jigheads. You will get broke off. If you’re not if you have enough, then get more. More is better.

“when I was burning the lure in after a cast around a 3 foot juvi tarpon followed the bait all the way to the kayak”

That is crazy and a good sign! We used to have a lot more tarpon. They’re still there, just not as easy to come by as in years past (like….a long time ago).

“but I wonder if the biomass of redfish even compares to Venice”

Nowhere close. The locals see to that.

When you were fishing the bottom in the deep stuff, how do you know you were hitting bottom with your lure?

I think Geoghegan is a good choice. Go grind the hell out of that deep hole. Commit to it and don’t be scared to fish everything from the shoreline the to the 30ft+ of water with a drop shot.

YCB on the 13th is a great choice as well.

Not bad at all. That sheepshead bite ought to get better, especially out in saltier water.

    Great report, thanks for posting!

    “Just have a 16ft. aluminum flat with a 48hp”

That’s all you need. Aluminum flatboats are where it’s at and an aluminum flatboat like yours is what got LAFB started. They just catch fish. It’s the angler, not the boat. Fish the conditions and you’ll do fine, whether that’s Lake Pontchartrain, Biloxi Marsh or Venice.

Great intro, welcome to the forum!

It is uncanny seeing Louisiana’s coast and green and blue with hardly any dirty water in sight. Unreal.

“But I definitely caught the tail end of the bite”

I’ve had that happen multiple times throughout the years at that exact spot. When it’s on, it’s on. It can be a great winter spot when it gets dead-nuts cold, as can the hole at the intersection of Bayou Laloutre and Spoil Canal across from Hopedale Marina.

    Great report, thanks for posting!

“clicked in 82 over the whole day”

That is pretty friggin good for when the fishing was much better. By today’s standards, that’s epic.

    Good job. Seriously.

Sometimes the fish are just a PITA and it seems like this was one of those days. It is what it is, but the most important thing is that you were on them. Excellent work.

Very textbook planning. Looks great! Excellent work.

I think you’re good to go given everything you presented, I would just add one thing if you’re not already thinking about it: drift those fishing spots that are shallow and wide. The fish very well may be spread out. The wind will be perfect for drifting.

    Good luck!

No problem. I think your instincts are pretty good on this one.

I just got home. lol I’m spending time with the family, watching the kids, and catching up on admin stuff.

The trolling motor on the Tracker is kaput. So that sucks, because that’s pretty much mandatory to fish the River.

That’s besides the point because I am getting rid of all the boats and making room for the Blazer. BUT, I am slated to roll back out in the next 30 days or so, so I have to prioritize and going fishing is one of those priorities, just not at the top.

Believe me it is driving me nuts, but a lot is in the air right now and the time to strike is when the iron is hot (all that stuff, you get it).

You know the day I get to go fishing is the day it takes a sh*t LOL

“I personally have concerns about my boat on the river but, I may be completely over thinking it.”

If the wind is calm, then the river is calm. If the wind is ripping right down the middle of it, then it will be rough. Just like anywhere else. Just like Guntersville, just like Chickamauga. I’m sure it’s not any different on Cherokees.
