“I’m a sponge trying to soak up as much fishing knowledge as I can so we can go catching instead of just fishing.”

The best way you’re going to get there is by using the process taught inside 101 and Winter Fish Location.

There really isn’t much planning to do for Geoghegan. It’s a single spot close to the dock. You literally idle there.

There isn’t much feedback to give: Geoghegan usually turns on after a strong cold front, like what we just had. I think it’s worth trying on Sunday, but I bet everyone else and their mom will be there if there’s any fish at all.

I think you’re better off figuring out a slew of fishing spots, at least a dozen, and running those. You’ve got the boat for it. Deep holes, bends in bayous, still water, dead end canals, that sort of thing.

After that, I’d fish artificial for speckled trout with a drop shot or jig.

“but now that it’s colder I’m thinking I should be looking for some deeper holes to find trout.”

Yup, that’s what I would do.

“I wonder if it’s gonna be too cold for trout”

Maybe not, Grand Isle is reporting 52 degrees. It’s when it gets into the 40s that trout start shutting down. I would expect the river water to be colder (though more stable).

I think you have a good plan, just ensure that your routes are solid, as the water will probably be low and the bottoms in PLH are hard, not soft. Not forgiving at all.

Make sure your GED homework is locked on.

Looking at what you’ve provided, IIRC, south of Tideline 2 is silted in pretty good. You will probably see standing birds there.

I remember fishing Hole 6 last year and not catching anything. Only fished it once, though.

IIRC, Hole 2 is a narrow channel that is heavily silted on each side. Might wanna take it slow.

Last year I caught good in that area, so I think you have a chance. Good luck!

Yeah, I have some experience tagging and can help you out.

What exactly are you asking? You want to know where the fish was initially tagged?

    Did you release the fish?

EDITED: Nevermind that last question, I see the dead tagged fish. lol I’m guessing you didn’t see it until it was already in the cooler.

I have experience with neither and don’t know if I ever will. BUT, I do like your train of thought and thinking ahead.

Looking forward to what you find out!

Man, I wish you would’ve given us more heads up than this. Hope you did well.

FWIW, next time you have conditions this good, and given the level of experience/skill you’ve demonstrated through your fishing reports, you’re better off focusing your TOW somewhere other than Hopedale.

Hopedale is the ugly fat chick no one asks to prom. On days like today, bag the prom queen.

Yeah, the tide isn’t that great, but overcast conditions are the best to fish for speckled trout, in my experience.

I’d look hard at Pointe a la Hache, especially when the river comes up. The reason being that people are not going to go down there to pressure what you find.

People will 1,000% pressure Hopedale. Oh, you found some fish at the Rock Dam? Great, within 24 hours there will be some YouTuber filming his 1,863,965th video there. Then the Flotilla will arrive because everyone knows how to get there.

But people are scared of PLH. Most “saltwater fishermen” are limp-wristed pussies. Take advantage of that. Higher quality and quantity trout are always nearer river water.

I could tell people to fish Third Bay and they’d puss out just because it’s not somewhere they’re familiar with. They need their hand held. You don’t.

    Go get the prom queen.

I’m not sure tagging works all that well. I haven’t had any of the speckled trout from years past come back to me. Most that were recaptured were recaptured in the immediate area within a short amount of time.

That’s a shame, and not the only way Louisiana is a mess. This state is FUBAR, especially when compared to her neighbors on the Gulf Coast.

Is it too much to ask to clean up the oil field trash?

Can’t wait to see you test it. It boggles my mind that such a tiny thing can talk to satellites, but here we are in 2026.

Sometimes, but you’d be better off going further south. I’d look hard at The Pen, Sulphur Mine at PAC or Catfish Lake.

It sounds like to me whoever tagged that fish hasn’t uploaded their report yet. I bet they just tagged that fish, and in the same area. Chances are they tagged a bunch and (since they’re a volunteer doing all this for free) probably have other priorities.

In the 1,500-ish fish I tagged that has more or less been my experience.

So in order to provide you that information, the original tagger has to get that information uploaded.

I’ve recaptured my fish in the same body of water when they were tagged as little as 24 hours prior.

I always release them so that the fish can continue their journey and get more data for the program.

The TAG Louisiana program lost funding about ten years ago. Long story. It’s been volunteers that have kept it up and I’m thankful for their efforts and glad they choose to do something more with their fishing time.

Thanks for reporting the tagged fish!
