“will be strictly sight fishing reds on fly and spin”

    Got it. No speckled trout.

Well, we have been here the last couple days and we’ve targeted speckled trout, redfish and red snapper while catching other species as well.

So I will help you with what I can. Honestly, at first glance it looks like you’re overthinking it, but I’ll address what you’ve brought up.

It doesn’t really matter what water levels are gonna do so long as you adapt to them. I think the most important thing will be follow the fish up and down the “stairs”. I don’t see any reason why you can’t get in redfish ponds off of Grand Pass. You ought to have enough water and the wind will lay down. You want to fish grassy stuff (submerged grass) because that grass will clean the water and make sight fishing a lot better. Plus that grass has cover and bait, another reason for redfish to be there.

“What should I expect in the interior ponds and outer bays?”

To identify the ones with the aforementioned grass and try them there. You want ponds that are kinda closed off and not open to wind action. Those tend to have better grass.

Keep in mind you have that strong NE wind right now. It is going to beat up any bays that aren’t protected. Look for water that sits in the lee of the land. Even better if there is grass there.

You can fish rock jetties with spinning tackle and a heavy jighead for bull reds. They’re almost always there. If you catch white trout, you are close to those deep-water bulls.

FWIW, I would avoid sight fishing Riverside Bay, we did not see any meaningful amount of redfish there.

As for ponds vs outer bays, you have enough time and range that you can do both. I’d also throw rock jetties into the mix. We hooked into a dozen+ bull reds yesterday on jetties. You can get jacks out there as well at Southwest Pass if its calm enough. Could be on Monday.

On Thursday we had a boat catch a limit of slots fishing interior ponds. You have a realistic shot at this.

I would not go to Delacroix. I’d go to Venice.

Are you telling me the name brand is worth it or are you asking about a specific PAL for a particular technique?

If folks are catching fish at the Long Rocks, then Comfort Island and surrounding area is definitely on.

You’ll have recent reports here in a few days. Check back with us, as a bunch of us are fishing down there Thursday thru Saturday.

Building off what I said earlier, you will want to take a look at this post.

It’s practically a “gimme” (actually…it is) and I would do a fishing trip out that way as conditions allow.

Not really. MODIS is at the end of its life span. I think one satellite has already burned in, the other one is on its way out.

I strongly recommend CSSP Geosphere. It gives you an image every 10 minutes, versus once or twice a day.

“but I had the itch and had to get out there”

Man, I hear that lol thirsty over here

“Got back to Hopedale with about 10 minutes to spare before it all let loose on us.”

    Boom. That’s how it’s done.

    “Around 15 throwbacks”

    Yikes! I hate hearing that.

“Didn’t stick to one spot, trolled up and down the rocks.

That’s how I like to do it, if I can. Sometimes there’s too many boats. April is really best to hit the Long Rocks before the crowd shows up.

“Long rocks produced, was fishing under a popping cork with live shrimp and Vudu shrimp.”

Now, I can’t help but notate something here: I hear a fishing report like that and I know I can get in there and crush a limit with a jig, casting to the rocks, as detailed here. Yes, it makes a difference. All the difference in the world, and not just there, but anywhere trout swim.

But whatever, you did good. Excellent report. I’ve been waiting patiently for a Long Rocks report, but the wind has not been cooperative. Thank you for striking when the iron got hot and letting us know about it!

Man, kudos to you for waiting out the storm. When I saw it that morning I immediately thought of you and @Jason_B knowing it was throwing a huge monkey wrench into y’all’s plans. I hate that for y’all. Sometimes you can wait it out, move around and make it happen, but wind is wind and lightning is lightning.

You’ll get at them next time.

Thanks for taking time to post a report. It was great reading it. Thank you.

Man, if you would’ve let us know you wanted to fish those areas, we (well, me…at least) would have steered you away. I’m not sure if you were targeting specks, reds or both, but I wouldn’t fish Muscle Bay, Cutoff, etc. for speckled trout this time of year. I’d be looking further east at diving birds and the oyster beds there. Bays Lawson and Boudreau across 3 Mile to West Karako is where I would look. Or the reef balls in Missisippi Sound, or south to Bay Eloi.

You can certainly get on redfish in Muscle Bay area, but the bowfishing charters have made those harder to come by.

Let us know next time you plan to go fishing and we can get you pointed in the right direction.

Kudos to you for sticking it out with the rain. That’s dedication and I respect that.

Above all, thank you for taking time to post a report. Thank you so much!

Well dang, I just took a giant crap on Hwy 11 for @Bennet planning post. lol

    I’m a big dummy.

But at least he’ll be ahead of the power curve fishing Lake Borgne.

    Godspeed, Bennett! lol

Yeah, I’ve done that for areas that didn’t have any good imagery.

But, be careful posting about that. The owner of Standard Map would sue the pants off of anyone trying to encroach on his business.

In 2016 at iCast we were hanging out and I mentioned to him that I was writing an article to show people how to use SASPlanet and IMC, and he stopped what he was doing, pulled out his briefcase and showed me all the litigation he had initiated.

I’m sure that now he’s old enough where he doesn’t have that kind of energy anymore.

You’re good to post about it here because it’s a private forum, but I wouldn’t put it out in the public anymore.

And +1 on the computing power. Simply put, if one has to ask if they have it, the answer is “you don’t”.

But with today’s processing power, rasterizing images should be a breeze.

Okay, that makes sense. Good to go. Magill Lagoon can be good, especially if there’s grass in it, or trolling Bayou Magill with gold spoons is a classic.

Yeah, when I saw the weather I was thinking of you. Some days you’re the hammer, other days you’re the nail.

But there is next time. The fish won the battle, but not the war.

    Thanks for reporting back.
