What were you throwing for the trout in 4 Horse when you were fishing under the birds?

Also, that big point on the west end of Chef Pass, as Lake P empties into it, that can be good on a falling tide, too. That spot and the ones above are worth trying in the event the bridges are a bust.

Man, I hate to hear about the tough day in Delacroix. Did you only target trout?

What’s nuts is that I think you can catch some trout on the Trestles. I can’t explain why, other than after the last cold front we had we were catching them shallow in Delacroix under a cork, and a friend was catching them on the Trestles. It may have something to do with the prolonged warm fall. I really don’t know. It does look like you’ll have some decent tide for tomorrow. I wish you good luck out there. You may want to get to the south side of the Trestles first, but your cleanest water will be further north. Same for Hwy 11. In fact, with the falling tide, I would get out to the south side of Hwy 11 straight away. You’ll be racing everyone and their mom there. So leave early.

After that, the east side of Lake P could be good. Like in the open water. Diving birds are a dead giveaway. Or drift the crab traps you see there. That worked for me real well a couple years ago, just drifting with a popping cork.

“Not sure what piece of the puzzle I was missing today”

It was the fish. They’re not there.

Well, I hate to hear you got the same result I did. I think that you did the best there could have possibly been done, it’s just that the fish weren’t there. You can’t catch fish in empty water. I don’t have reason to believe that one is going to find great fishing everywhere, and if they weren’t there when it was warm, I doubt one would find them there when it was cold.

With that said, if I were to fish those areas again, I would need to see a lower water temp. It’s still in the low to mid 60’s if I am reading the varying stations correctly. I bet those trout aren’t going to come off the Trestles that easily. The shrimp are still leaving. When the trout do leave the lake, I bet they go into the ICW by Boh Bros, because that’s where they went last year.

I’ll give you credit for trying anyway and trying a bunch of other spots without having your hand held. There’s something to be said about that. But getting your ass kicked is a risk that comes with that territory. lol It’s just part of the game.

I really don’t want to fish the Trestles either, outside of shooting (another) video for it. I would definitely look hard at the rigs outside of Kenner, the reef balls and open-water birds, maybe even the lakefront.

    Great report, thanks for posting!

I’m guessing you didn’t like that Gator jacket enough to let it fly out the boat and not buy another one? lol jk

I’m a fan of Eddie Bauer. Their stuff lasts. They can be pricier, but you get what you pay for. The black/grey jacket in my videos I have had since 2016 and it’s still going strong. I don’t recall the model and couldn’t find it listed on the jacket itself. It’s been to Ireland with me and even went up the side of a volcano last year. The fishing trips were much harder on it, though.

The river still looks like garbage. I’m not saying that there isn’t any good fishing in Venice, I’m just saying that the action-filled, emerald green water that we see when the river is low probably isn’t gonna be there when you make it down here. Fortunately for you, you’re looking for redfish, and I think you can still have those fishing riprap on the banks of the river, or fishing channels coming off the river, like what you described. Just remember that duck hunters will be out there, even if its the split (I don’t recall at the moment) they’ll still be out there checking their leases and may be unappreciative of you so much as looking at “their” water. It depends on the duck hunter. That’s why I like the river. I think you should also consider Pass a Loutre, Cheniere Pass and anywhere there’s cane stubble and it’s protected from the wind. It looks like you’re gonna have a cold front hit on the 5th and 6th.

“I was also excited to use my new DJI Osmo Action 4 camera.”

    How did that go?

“We picked up and went toward some birds we saw in the distance only to find a dink fest! Time to move on again!”

Yeah, I think that would’ve torpedoed most people’s fishing trip right then and there. Rather than move on, they’d stay and waste time.

“By this time the Pen looked like a redneck yacht club. There must have been 30 boats in there!”

I’ve never got to experience that community hole, but have heard about it a lot over the years. It seems like I’ve heard about it less since The Freshening, but perhaps that’s changing now.

“When we got close we could see about 30 birds hovering the area. Things looked really promising! We NAILED them!! Within maybe 10 minutes, we had a limit right at 9am!”

Maybe you caught the beginning of the bite before leaving?

“I really want him to love fishing like I do but I know it’s not something you can force.”

    Wise words.

Great report, great wisdom, thank you for sharing!

“We ended up with 36 nice trout and released 8 really nice flounder. Not a bad day at all, especially after the chaos that morning.”

I’ll take that. That’s a good trip, even better given the circumstances. Did you ever find out what the issue was?

“Their must have been 50 plus boats out there today.”

Oh man. That’s about right, though. Hey, at least they don’t know who you are. lol

Yeah, I’m upset with myself (sort of) that I didn’t give Lake P more faith. Like, the conditions faked me out this year, sending me down south to Venice just to have the river come up and mostly ignore Lake P. Oh well. Live and learn. That’s inshore fishing.

Anyway, great report. I may give it a try after un-effing my trailer (which has yet to be done lol)

+1 on everything this man said

I really like gray colors, but what he said is spot on. Make yourself easy to see. Brilliant.

Yes, they are, and renown for good quality, though I believe that these days not everything they make is JDM. Either way, it’s good stuff. $15 is a great deal.

They are 1,000% making minimum viable products to get by. I’m sure there’s more to it, but I am thinking that for the “next boat” there will be a custom built trailer using components like what you see for offshore boat trailers. Ridiculously beefy and oversized so it just lasts.

    This is a great point.

I know that I check to ensure the boat is not already drifting fast when I hit spot lock. It’s pretty much subconscious now and rarely will I let the trolling motor do all the work. At the end of the day it’s just a dumb machine. It has no context and will 100% blow out the water column if it means achieving it’s single, menial task. I really only ask anything of it in deeper water, no shallower than 4-6ft, and am comfortable asking it to spot lock in 10-13ft+.
