I am new to Venice and have only made 3 trips down there, but all were recent. I have not hammered them down there yet so take my advice for what it’s worth, but I have done extensive research of Venice.
This time of year is when the Trout are closest to the marina. When the river is low they get up in the passes and even in the MS River itself. Any cut off the main river would be worth trying. The Jump is a great place to start.
The biggest hurdle when it comes to Venice is the navigation aspect. Do your homework on GED and map out safe routes to get to the places you want to fish first and foremost. Also, make sure your trolling motor is working properly, because you’re going to need it.
My suggestion would be to pick a general area that you want to fish, pick out some spots, map routes to get to those spots, then post them here. I know Devin will chime in and I will try to help you as much as I can. There are some other members who can give feedback on Venice too.

“Water temp was 64 degrees. lol Just kidding, it was 76 because this November is wild and warm. I have no idea what’s going on.”
My heart dropped a little bit when I read 64 degrees. Seriously, this water temp and weather sucks.

Great trip and great report man. I wouldn’t feel bad about smacking them right by the marina under birds. If thats the conditions that were presented to you and you took advantage of that, then good on you.
I’ve only fished this area once and it was in a Kayak, but I’ve heard now is the time to go if you want to catch Speckled Trout. And I think you confirmed that.
Thanks for sharing!

Curious, what went into your thought process to stay and grind it out when you were in Marron? I often find myself in that situation, particularly when fishing the Biloxi Marsh, but almost 100% I elect to run and gun to another spot rather than grind it out.
I know weeding through throw backs to catch 13 keeper trout is annoying AF, but shoot, I would take that on a tough day. I just don’t think I would’ve stuck around like you did to find them.

Awesome day man. It’s nice when the stars still align even with your trolling motor breaking. I gotta get down to PS soon!

I am not aware of any inshore fishing podcasts, but would love to start listening to some.
What are some good ones you like? Anything local?

Thanks guys for the responses.
As far as my plan goes— it is pretty much mirroring what I initially had planned for my trip in September on 9/22 when Devin referred to me as the tip of the spear. Well the spear is back baby!
I have about 2.5 days to fish Venice, so I plan to do a lot of exploring. A lot of it. My planning has been mostly routes to and through general areas, so I don’t have all that many spots to show, but I know that in no particular order I want to check out the following areas: Red Pass and West out into Scofield Bay, The Jump, Tiger Pass and Ponds off there, Grand Pass, Zin Zin Bay, First Spillway, Williams Pass, Baptiste Collette Rocks on the MS River side, Wagon Wheel, and other random cuts in the river that look good (how vague!). I will post a pic of some spots I planned for 9/22, but I think what will end up happening is that I will get to the area I want to fish, then find a spot that looks good once I get out there.
Question: I am going with the goal to catch speckled trout and redfish, but another goal is to get more routes stored in my graph. When running a new route in a sketch area like Venice, are you idling pretty much the entire way? Even through a big wide open bay where you gotta run a few miles? Also, I know that the mouths of the canals are where it can get really shallow. Are you idling through pretty much all of those too? I hate long ass extended idles, but I know its worth it based off the fact that I would like to keep my lower unit intact, but also because I have plenty of time to make these long idles since I am staying down there for the weekend.
Let me know!

Devin. Quit being silly and go to Venice!
Go see if they’re in East Bay behind that sandbar. Please!

Lol, yeah I know exactly how you feel. At least in Venice when you measure them, it’s to see if they’re over 20” lol.
A good trolling motor is definitely a must. Had I not upgraded from the crappy trolling motor that came on my boat, theres no way I could fish Venice.

Man I hate to hear that. Hopefully you’re not out of commission too long. I’m sure it helps that Avid’s factory is close.

Next time I go down there will probably be Black Friday. Then in December I’ll definitely have multiple trips down there.
I’ll be looking forward to your report from whenever you go. And the video. You should throw it back and do a Fishing Trip Review for Venice!!!

I hope you crush it! I’ll be looking forward to your report as well. I’d like to see your plan too if you are planning on posting it. Good luck!

“Did you only fish a cork there? You didn’t jig the rocks at all? I’m sure you did!”
I did, but didn’t give it the time it deserved. I soaked that cork too long.
“I have had the most brutal days there of running and not seeing a dang thing, getting stuck, getting unstuck, more empty water and I always leave there like “dang, what a day”.
I have felt this way every time I’ve left there and I have yet to hammer anything there lol. Adventure is a hell of drug.
“I do think it’s worth mentioning that when I fish 1st Spillway I fish just outside of it on the south side of the weir on the south side of the spillway going into the river. I’ve just done better there. Then, from there, I drift down and fish the rocks.”
That spot was where I landed those first two specks. It’s a great looking spot. I definitely want to pac man those rocks. I was so fired up at that point on day 1, I was ready to run and gun everywhere lol.
