Long answer:
Okay, there’s a lot to unpack here, so please deal with me.
First, I talked to my Delacroix guide buddy yesterday and he says that the redfish action absolutely sucks. Like, between four trips he had 16 reds to show for it.
Now, there’s even more I can say there, but my point is that the cork bite sucks.
That doesn’t necessarily mean the grass/sight fishing bite/chunking and winding a lure bite sucks.
He has to fish with morons and throw corks for them.
I could probably go in there and squeak out my four slots sight fishing or even blind casting.
There’s no reason why you can’t, either.
So – based off the information I have – here’s your problem: you’re on fish, you’re just not catching them.
Especially when I read this:
“The redfish spinner baits with the spoon get all tangled up in the grass.”
Yeah, that’s why I categorically don’t use them. I don’t use spoons either. Snag City, my dude.
That’s why I use a Texas Rig. It’s cheap, simple, easy and impossible to f*ck up. It pulls throw that weak milfoil without getting snagged easily and dragging a 10lb salad behind it.
Redfish don’t chase and eat 10lb salads.
“Should I just drop jigs into the clear spots?”
No, because the jig will also snag. Texas Rig.
Ideally, you want to sight fish the redfish. If the water is clear enough you don’t need a stand, or even a cooler to stand on. You will see them bigger than sh*t.
If you don’t see them, then it’s because they’re not there. Go somewhere else.
Or blind cast that Texas Rig. Chunk and wind.
But I find it hard to believe that one could go into Lake Lery, Bayou Duhe, etc. and not squeak out four.
Lastly, this is why I ask for detailed reports. The more any of you tell me, the more I can help. Because when y’all do, I read the details and know that the effort wasn’t well spent. Whether that’s “I threw quarter ounce jigheads in Breton Sound on a 2ft falling tide” or “my pond was too grassy to fish”, then I know the problem was not the fish, it was the fisherman.
Everytime I hear these complaints, then I launch the boat and go crush the daylights out of the fish. Details help me help you.
Next, the cork guides are not going to fish that grassy stuff. They just can’t. But you can.
If a grass mat is too thick, then fish the edge of it. Ideally, you want to find something that’s broken up, like in the videos I’ve published over the years.
Or, there will be a channel between the shore and grass mat that more often than not is going to be clear and make it easy to determine if fish are there or not.
I’ve used the above techniques to catch limits of redfish from Slidell to Venice to Houma in a 12ft Alweld with a 2-stroke and no trolling motor to a tricked-out Majek tower boat.
