7ā-7ā3ā would work. Iād be looking at a medium to medium heavy rod with a fast action. I like St Croix rods but they seem to be about a half to full power up from most other rods. So a Medium/fast st croix would put you right in the sweet spot. The premier line has great bang for buck.
I used to have a $400+ custom rod for fishing the bridges before I snapped it. A really good guide buddy who has been fishing the lake for a long time convinced me to go with the 6ā premier and I can barely tell the difference.
For casting reels Iād trust the guys here over my own opinions. I kind of pick a reputable brand and stick with that to learn all of their intricacies. Lews is who I go to for reels and Iāve yet to have any reasons to switch but there may be better options out there.
