That’s a good question, similar to another one posted here.
The LA One card is a good card, just get the cheapest one you can find. What unit do you run? Lowrance? Garmin?
Do not worry about getting one that’s up to date because (spoiler alert) it’s not. If you’re ever unsure what year the satellite imagery in that card was taken, ask here and we can figure it out.
Honestly, your base map is probably “good enough”. What’s really gonna matter (you and anyone reading this wants to pay attention to this) is doing your navigational homework in GED and then double checking it here in the Community.
I don’t have a diploma in inshore navigation, but I do have a six-pack OUPV certification and 100 gross ton Master’s License, several lower units, plenty of missing gelcoat and TIG welds to account for my accumulated experience across Louisiana’s coast in the last sixteen years fishing the hell out of it.
In fact, I have such a hard on for mapping cards that I went out of my way to make this totally free article bashing the daylights out of them.
I strongly suggest reading that article, it can save your lower unit (or your ass).
I would not spend $500 on a mapping card with aerial/satellite imagery. Not knowing what I know now.
