The TLDR here is that you expertly handled that situation and have the right mindset. Keep going.
“Man, we gotta watch out for you kayakers.”
I think he meant that in a literal way. When you’re standing up in a bay boat that tends to put kayaks below the horizon and makes them harder to see. It’s a safety thing.
“The first reason I didn’t ask my charter friend for advice was, I WANTED TO FIND MY OWN FISH.”
Same reason I don’t. Additionally, if someone sent me to the fish, then did I really find them?
After that, once I’m entangled in the “he sent me to the fish” then it’s like I owe him, and it’s really easy to get sucked into the minutiae of man drama rather than the minutiae of the process of covering water and finding fish.
Do you want to be a “phone call captain” or legitimately good at fishing?
“He said, “As soon as your kids get out of school, let me know. I wan’t to take you and your three boys fishing. On the house.””
What a guy! I hope y’all went and had a good time. Maybe pick his brain about techniques/process a little.
“Four flounder, two trout, and a keeper red.”
That’s great. Good work.
“And I mused, “Is it wrong to ask free advice of a charter captain?””
Well, what is that advice? If it’s “go here to catch fish” then that’s not real advice, that’s spoon-feeding. Because even if you do catch fish at that spot, it will eventually dry up then you’re stuck with finding them again. It’s better to learn how to find them from scratch than lean on a network.
Just getting to reel in fish and catch them at a spot that was handed out can be good in the same way that a cast helps a broken bone heel, but eventually the cast has to come off.
You are on the right path. You are doing the thing and embracing The Way.
You should probably get down to Grand Isle/Elmer’s in the next 30 days.
