    +1 on having a visual marker, great point bringing that up.

    This is something that I actually have a lot of experience with. When that helo is way up there (or even a search plane, flying at a higher altitude) it is very difficult to see what’s down there, especially if you have a boat that’s colored gray (like mine is).

    You really want to make it as easy as possible for folks to find you.

    In fact, I know @Daniel_Gig mentioned this before, but maybe consider bright clothing versus camo/gray clothing. So if you are floating in the water, rescue personnel can see you. I have gray/dark clothing and when I get a new jacket I plan on something bright and orange. My kids are dressed in bright clothing as well, whenever we go fishing (or really anywhere).

    The dye is a good idea. I’ve used smoke grenades before and they will also dye the water or put an orange (or whatever color) plume in the air. Don’t use gray smoke.

    This discussion is really good to consider safety/survival for when the worst inevitably happens. You have to have a “when”, not “if”, mentality.
