I have a mounted VHF on the boat with an antenna on the top. I have never tested the extended range. I have talked around 8 miles to a buddies boat. I have received comms from the coast guard way out. I dont have to get transmissions to home base but hopefully another boat will hear and respond or at least past the word on.
I also have a ACR PLB for all else fails shtf. I keep putting off the inreach. I dont travel outside of cell service much if at all and so far when I have traveled out of cell coverage, I have been out with a buddy in another boat not too far away. But like Devin said “When you are legit broke down and need help, you and I both know we will
eat fifteen one-dollar bills if it meant getting rescued.” I might eat that in nickles if I was stranded out somewhere, especially in this heat. The older I get the more I like to make it back home at night.
