“I know that fish eating before a front is taught in 101, but I don’t believe the pressure is mentioned.”

It’s actually mentioned here beginning at about the 45 minute mark.

I don’t believe that air pressure is a significant factor for good fishing, if at all. One day, when I’m bored, have nothing to do and want to do something more fascinating than watching paint dry I will compile all of my fishing trips and you will see:

    • great fishing trips when the pressure is above 30″
    • great fishing trips when the pressure is below 30″
    • great fishing trips when the pressure is falling or rising above/below 30″

    You will also see:

    • awful fishing trips when the pressure is above 30″
    • awful fishing trips when the pressure is below 30″
    • awful fishing trips when the pressure is falling or rising above/below 30″

There’s just so much more that goes into catching a limit of fish and if I thought air pressure was such a deal breaker don’t you think I’d have planned my trips around that? Why do guides still launch in the morning if the air pressure doesn’t fall until some time later in the day? Why does anybody in a fishing tournament bother with the hazards of blastoff when they can eat a burger at the dock and wait for the air pressure to do something?

I’m inclined to think that air pressure merely changes the same time other things happen, like overcast weather (a la Buck Perry).

I also do wonder if air pressure can cause phytoplankton to rise/fall in the water column, causing bait to move and causing fishing to turn on. I think there’s something to that that is worth investigating.

Last, but not least, I do think that we didn’t catch a limit of trout on Tuesday because we did not find them. Fish have tails and they move, even in Venice.

Thanks the stars that @Geremy whacked ’em yesterday, because that’s proof the fish are still down there. We did try PAL, but it was a half-hearted attempt late in the day without a loaded GPS and properly functioning sonar. If I had my boat and the whole day I probably would have found those fish. Much easier said than done, of course.
